The Spyder3 Express was very easy to install and use. All instructions are intuitive and easy to follow - no tech tricks required. The entire process was done in 15 minutes.

When the calibration is completed the program gives you a screen that allows you to switch back and forth between the before calibration view and the after calibration view. This is a great feature that allows you to see the difference before you store the calibration settings.

The product meets all expectations and is a great value for the price.

Re: Amazon service - I needed this tool ASAP and paid the extra for next day delivery. I ordered it on a Friday at 11am and it was on my doorstep at 10am on Saturday.

I'm an amateur photographer with no prior experience with color management, but took a leap of faith and spent the bucks on Datacolor's Spyder3 Express device and software. I'm happy to report that the product was straightforward to use, and most importantly, has perceptibly improved the color balance of my digital photos as viewed on my LCD screen.

Although it does not mention it in the description, this product only supports the primary monitor. If you have a secondary monitor, it is not supported -- you must use the Pro model.

I got a new monitor and tried to calibrate it using the Spyder3 Express. The resulting screen display had a strong red color cast. I tried everything I could think of to fix it, thinking I was doing something wrong. But really, the process is so simple there's little room for error. I finally wrote to the Datacolor support people. After 2 days, I got a response telling me to "calibrate to the Native White Point instead of to the 6500k." There was nothing about that in the instructions, either on paper or on-screen, and I had no idea what that meant, so I wrote back and said so. About a day and a half later, I got a response from someone who tried to guide me through the program menus to find the "native white point" setting. Unfortunately, he had apparently never actually SEEN the menus because his instructions were SO off! So I dug around by myself and found something that said only "LCD native" (nothing about white point). I checked that and recalibrated and the color cast was gone.
You'd think that something so important would somehow be mentioned SOMEWHERE in the instructions. But alas, if you check the online forums for Spyder color cast, you'll find other people having similar problems. There's also nothing about this in their FAQs or knowledge base on their website.
One other thing that turns out to be a bigger problem than it seems. Once you take the product out of the package and use it, you can't put it back in to store it. Okay, you COULD but trust me, you won't want to because it's such a hassle. So you have to find some way to store this thing where it's protected from damage when you're not using it. And considering that this is a product that's meant to be stored more than used, that's a major oversight on the part of the company.

does exactly as it says. worked fine on my windows 7 64bit. calibration takes around 6-7 mins.
although the express version doesnt have built in support for dual monitor. you can just run the calibration on each screen separately and then use the windows builtin color management to assign the created profiles to each monitor separetely.

After installing the Spyder 3 on my computer, I was able to see "before" and "after" pictures of my display screen. I was amazed at how "off" my colors were. I love knowing that when I fix the colors in the photographs I take, they'll be accurate! Worth the money!

First off: this product was extremely easy to use and had great color once it calibrated my HP ZR22w IPS monitor, but what grossly disappointed me was that it was entirely unusable for a dual monitor set-up! Apparently the "Pro" and "Elite" versions support this, but not the "Express" version. There is no way I would pay ~$90 (the cost of the Express version) to only calibrate one of my monitors!

After trying for a few days to find a way around this using color profiles for the individual monitors, I eventually gave up and have sent this item back to Amazon. While I understand that some of the more "advanced" features are only available on the "Pro" and "Elite" versions of the Spyder 3, I find it ridiculous that dual monitor calibration wasn't included on the Express version for the price you pay for this product.

So if you only have one monitor or plan to use one monitor and only need basic features: this might be the product for you!

But if you have two or more monitors you want to calibrate on your system: avoid this product and look elsewhere!

After installing the software, you plug in the device and after the USB drivers initialize you proceed to run the Spyder 3 Express software. Well, the drivers would not initialize properly in my Windows XP SP3 system with all the latest patches.

I uninstalled the drivers and re-plugged the device with the same result. The system reports a problem, says it can't initialize the drivers and gives an error number of 37, a standard Windows message.

Completely uninstalling with deep removal software and re-installation yielded the same results.

I even downloaded the latest software/drivers from Datacolor and re-installed after a complete uninstallation -- still not working.

I've been in the computer industry for 35 years as a software engineer, systems analyst, MSFT beta tester, design engineer and computer scientist. I only spent 2-3 hours fiddling with this package but I don't think it deserves more effort.

It's a poor design. Rather than generate a standard color configuration file readable by other software, it generates it's own file, and requires that you run a program in the background all the time. It leaves yet another icon in your systray, and if you stop the background program, your calibration isn't honored and the correction disappears.

Even though the background program is small and does't use many CPU cycles, it's another layer of complication added to your computer, which may already have more than enough complications.

I didn't test this but the program requires strict registration using a product key, so there may be no way you can use it to correct all your computers by moving the device from one to another. You might need to buy a Spyder for each of your computers.
