Basically, there's a device that plugs into the USB of your laptop... this device allows you to pop in a game. The instructions are included, but to sum it up, you have to go to their website and download the software (which is safe for those who are paranoid) and once you have it installed (It only took me a minute), you open it and begin. Once you plug in the game, the codes for that specific game are brought up on the screen.
I bought this for use with Pokemon X and Y, as well as Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
I was pretty happy with the codes available for both. There are tons of codes, specifically for Pokemon X and Y and they occasionally add new ones.
If you're afraid of your game getting corrupted, I don't think you should be. Whenever you go to load a new cheat code, it saves a backup of your game. There was once instance that it froze for Pokemon for whatever reason... I got on the game and it looked fine, but decided to restore the backup anyway. No worries! It's very safe. (I'm a huge fan of the backup feature).
PLEASE NOTE, HOWEVER, THAT THIS ONLY WORKS FOR GAMES YOU HAVE PHYSICAL COPY OF! If you downloaded a game from the 3DS's digital shop, you cannot use this! I happen to own 3 AC:NLs and I can only use it for the two that are physical copies! Not a problem for me, but it's worth noting!
I have several kids in my household who play 3DS games. In the early days of handheld gaming, game cartridges could often hold three different save files (except for Pokemon, which always only supported a single user). This was ideal because we could buy a single cartridge and each of the children could use it, in turn, without messing up the other save files, and we didn't have to buy a handful of identical games. Fast forward to today, where despite the fact that nonvolatile memory is big and cheap, all the games now support only a single save file.
In short, the Powersaves Pro device allows you to connect a Nintendo 3DS game cartridge to your Windows PC and make a backup of the cartridge's save file. You can choose to restore any backup to the game cartridge.
There are a lot of reasons why you would want to do this:
(1) Everyone in your household can save and restore their game progress between the PC and the game cartridge, allowing you to buy ONE cartridge that can be used by many people.
(2) You might be unhappy with the results of a game, and if you have been backing it up along the way, you can restore it to a previous state. You can restore it to the day before you used that Master Ball to catch a Magikarp, or the day you stupidly traded away your precious Victini for a Bidoof.
(3) You might be really good at losing your game cartridges -- or putting them through the wash -- and you don't want to start all over when you buy a replacement game cartridge.
(4) You might even want to use the Powersaves cheats to edit the save file and give yourself infinite items or acquire things that would take hours and hours of pedestrian grinding to accomplish otherwise.Read more ›
I use it for Pokemon Y - My favorite thing to do is bank a box full of generated shinies (turned all BOX 1 'Mons shiny with the AR) and pass them out to newbies or in Wonder Trade. It's like being Oprah - "You get a Black Charizard! And YOU get a Shiny Gengar!"
Great for event only mons - which amazing.
Still, once I bought this, played for a while with hacks - I stopped playing because it's boring to do have everything with no effort.
Other people said they had issues finding the registration code, but it's on the back of the start up instructs enclosed...not very difficult to find imo, but maybe I'm the next Sherlock Holmes?
I also had no problem registering said code, nor did I have any issues with the servers being unavailable. I used it for the first time on Christmas Eve, and it hasn't been down at all over the holiday. I've used it about once a day since and all the codes work beautifully. And the event Pokémon codes register as legit, so you can transfer them to Pokebank!
I agree the USB cord is crazy short, but I just plugged it into my laptop instead of my desktop so it doesn't really matter. As long as you don't rough house with it (and maybe take it out to a romantic dinner), it'll work fine. You really don't need to replace it like others have suggested unless you just want length.
I was pretty leery to purchase this considering some of the reviews, but either it really is hit-or-miss like some say, or the product/customer service has been improved a little. I'm super happy with it overall and I'll definitely recommend it!
