Praise for Emelle Gamble

DATING CARY GRANT voted BOOK OF THE MONTH by Long and Short Review readers!!!

DATING CARY GRANT "...
the author went into the mind and lives of Tracy and Mike in such a way that you could really relate to both of them. I could really understand each of them and how they had gotten to this point in their marriage. It really is a love story, not just a break up story, and It was so well written and had unique plot, that I just couldn't put this book down until I had finished it. I loved it, and I loved the way it ended and for any of you who are looking for a fun, yet serious in a way, romance, this one is for you." Long and Short Reviews

DATING CARY GRANT"Fantasy and reality blend together in this mesmerizing tale from Emelle Gamble. I had a hard time putting it down, even as my eyes were getting dried out and closing from exhaustion...It's not your typical romance, making it a breath of fresh air in a market currently inundated with new adult contemporary romances (which I do love, but need a break once in a while!). I continue to be a fan of this author..." Andi's Book Reviews

"I rarely gush over a book these days. I read at least one, sometimes two books a day and so I can be hard to move. But, this one really got to me... you do not want to miss... Molly Harper."  Clue Review

"Secret Sister is one of those books that leaves you re-thinking everything you once believed...Along with being a very unique and captivating plot...I cannot recommend Secret sister strong enough for those of you that enjoy a book that not only touches your heart but has you tingling in anticipation for whatever comes next." From the Author

  DATING CARY GRANT?

A Modern Manhattan fairy tale...

Now think. If you had a choice to spend your evenings the next few weeks with a charming, sexy movie star, or with your husband, whom would you choose?

Well, of course you'd choose your husband. He's your true love. The man you've promised yourself to, committed yourself to, till death do you part.  Right?

But, what if your husband is a workaholic and, despite the fact that his ambitions are to help people lead better lives, he pretty much ignores you most of the time. So what if you decided to move out on your own? Because you need a break from the discussions and disappointment and stuck in the mud, unable to move forward place you find yourselves in. Because you do, after all, want to find a permanent solution to your marital woes.

Would you like a little company? (Did I mention the sexy movie star?) Well, what if the movie star was  -- ta dah!!! --  Cary Grant!

Cary Grant???

Well, I don't mean the real Cary Grant, right? The star of Notorious, and Indiscreet, the hunk in It Takes a Thief and North by Northwest, to name a few of his seventy-two films? I can't mean Mr. uber-Handsome, Mr. Cleft in his chin, Mr. Very, very cool, classy movie star ICON, right? Because, you're certainly thinking, isn't Mr. Grant, well, dead?

Yes, unfortunately he is.

But what if his totally perfect and sexy ghost was currently living in a high-end townhouse in New York City? And he's sweet and tan and mixes great martinis. He likes white dinner jackets and a heart-to-hearts  by the fire where he can lean close and whisper in your ear, "What else can I for you tonight?"

Yikes.

So, I ask again. If you had to pick between spending the next few weeks with the guy who might have been your biggest mistake in life, or a legend who listens when you talk, always understands what you mean (and looks like a Greek god would look if he was an Englishman), who would you choose?

Hubby? Or Cary?

Written with the languorous pace of an older era, Dating Cary Grant is a sweet contemporary story of coming to terms with dreams and second chances. I enjoyed the twists the story takes, along with the ghostly flourishes that kept my attention. If you enjoy slower paced stories that feature cinematic personalities, you'll like this book.

I thought this was a sweet story. It was both contemporary but had touches of "old movies" romance and atmosphere. I totally enjoyed every minute I was reading this story. Very cute and funny.

If I'm ever haunted by a ghost I can only hope and pray that it would be Cary Grant!! One can dream right?? That is what intrigued me most about picking up this particular romance... I like to dive into something a little different every now and then.
Even though I love the idea of the story, I can't say that I particularly liked the leading lady or her husband Mike. These two and their self absorbed ways was a bit difficult or me to wrap my head around. Neither one of them wanting to give up their careers led to Tracy moving to New York to live in an old small apartment so she would no longer have to commute. An apartment that has no phone reception and no way to install a landline. But, it does have a handsome resident who goes by the name Phillip... (aka) our resident ghost! Tracy becomes somewhat infatuated with the handsome man who makes her feel like a desirable woman.
This is a romance that revolves heavily around the old movies from the past... it's not a steamy romance but instead plays on our ideas of the kind of man that would be our own... "Mr. Perfect". For Tracy that was Cary Grant...
This was a good solid read... not for all romance fans... but, might appeal mostly to those who spend a lot of time with their head into the old romance icons of the past. I liked it but I didn't love it... but, only because I was having trouble coping with our wishy washy heroine and husband and their constant inability to communicate with each other and make compromises. I was pleased with the ending BUT it was a frustrating journey! But, maybe that was the point.. :)

This story has an interesting plot twist that isn't revealed until about the middle of the book. Although this tale is interesting with characters who are out of the ordinary, it tends to move slowly. The plot itself is unique in that it is a novel about romance, but the husband and wife are in two different states for all but a few days. Ms. Gamble is an expert in angst and the reader feels it from the very beginning of the story. This is a delightful tale that gets bogged down in too much detailed, but is a good read in spite of that. The reader will indeed hear Cary Grant's voice in their head every time he makes an appearance. An unusual read that will put a smile on one's face.

In a conversation about past Oscar winners, I mentioned Katherine Hepburn as a favorite. I liked Cary Grant too, but surprisingly Cary received an honorary Oscar, never winning for his multitude of great movies. I received “Dating Cary Grant” as a gift and was pleasantly taken on a ride about a young woman striking out on her own from a husband totally wrapped up in the concerns of local government, 100 miles away from her workplace and her successful career. Tracy is making an effort to have a life of her own as her husband Mike has no time for her at all. She sublets an apartment near the television station where she works and runs into a couple of outrageous characters who look suspiciously familiar. Kate and Cary seem to be like guardian angels, appearing for support and advice as Tracy falls into repeated calamities. The story is a fun and cozy read, one of those you just have to finish, and not everything you assume will happen actually does! There are twists and turns and ghostly appearances that make this enjoyable. This sweet romantic story shows just how unrealistic expectations can get in the way of real life and aspirations. Sit down in a comfy chair and prepare for Cary’s charming voice to spill from the pages!

Disclaimer: The author has become a friend, but I just wouldn't review this if I hadn't enjoyed it. I think this book is charming and heartfelt, and will especially please fans of old movies (which includes me) as well as fans of old New York. I loved the way the plot makes us build a comparison between Cary Grant the dreamy matinee idol and Cary Grant the man who repeatedly divorced, and between Katherine Hepburn's iconic characters and Katherine Hepburn the woman. I liked that the heroine eventually has to choose between a fantasy version of life and something far more complicated, but more substantial. I LOVED the discussion of The Philadelphia Story (and totally agreed with it!). I liked that the obnoxious villain zagged when I expected him to zig. I even managed to tear up towards the end. I do think the author could sometimes stand to pare down her (very good) dialogue to keep the pace moving (though old classic movies are, of course, bursting with clever, rapid-fire dialogue). I was also a little flummoxed by some characters' names for awhile -- but perhaps moving the explanation up sooner would have ruined some of the fun. If you'd like some romantic comedy and suspense that plays with the contrast between the old movies, reality, and even reality TV, this is definitely the book for you.
