Gr 8 Up—Frances Mace is on a luxury cruise liner, Persephone, with her parents when it is attacked by a mysterious group. The attackers violently and systematically murder everyone aboard. Only Frances, her friend Libby, and two others manage to escape. Frances and Libby spend a week together adrift at sea before Libby's father arrives to rescue them. He is too late for his daughter, but Frances has survived. To protect Frances from the attackers, Libby's father proposes she adopt Libby's identity. Two others have survived the disaster, Senator Wells and his son Grey. At first, Frances is ecstatic; she and Grey fell in love with each other on the cruise. It comes as a shock when she learns they are not telling the truth about the cause of the disaster. Frances suspects Senator Wells may have been behind the attack, and her bitterness at the loss of her family, friend, and identity causes her to plot revenge. After four years, she is finally ready to put her plan into motion. Can she suppress her feelings and enact her vengeance on Grey and his family? Is she able to reconcile herself with the loss of who she was as Frances Mace with who she is now: some caricature of Libby O'Martin? Ryan, known for her The Forest of Hands and Teeth (Random, 2009), delivers a suspenseful thriller dealing with themes of identity, love, loss, and getting even. VERDICT Fans of the television show Revenge will enjoy this fast-paced additional purchase.—Tiffany Davis, Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NY --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
“There’s a Gone Girl quality to [Daughter of Deep Silence] . . . Frances’/Libby’s careful research, plotting, and design…are reminiscent of Amy Dunne’s craftiness. The sweet love stories that haunt these complex teenagers, however, are theirs alone, a subset of a multilayered story of assumed identity, revenge, and possible, if uncertain, happy endings.” —Booklist
“Daughter of Deep Silence is a perilous thriller, taut and brilliantly paced...It’s an intriguing blend of subterfuge and brutal possibilities.” —Romantic Times, Top Pick
“This romantic revenge thriller will keep readers turning pages in a state of breathless suspense.” —Kirkus Reviews

Almost the entirety of the book is about revenge. The main character is incredibly jaded about something terrible that happened to her when she was younger, and she can't get over it. She plots and plots her revenge throughout the book, and when she finally gets the balls to carry out her plans, something goes wrong. And that "something" that goes wrong is really predictable.
That's the entire book. Seriously. The only part I truly liked was the very end -- the last few pages. If I wasn't a stickler for finishing things I start I doubt I would've gotten through this one.
I'd pass on this one if I were you. Hopefully Carrie writes a thriller next, because that seems to be her specialty.
It's a classic tale of revengey goodness as fourteen year old Frances Mace survives a vicious attack on the cruise ship she and her family are on. When she and new friend Libby survive the gunmen's attempts to murder the entire ship, she finds herself adrift for seven days. Libby does not survive, dying right before their rescue. Libby's father suggests Frances takes his daughters place so he can protect her using his wealth and power. She soon discovers the boy she fell in love with on the ship, the son of the powerful Senator Wells, and the Senator himself also survived, but have lied to the public saying it was a giant wave that sank the ship, not gunmen. For four years, Frances, now Libby hides from the public, planning how to bring down the Senator who is clearly involved. When Libby's father dies it's time for Libby to come back home and start her venture of revenge. Working her way into the lives of the Senator's family, and trying to avoid Libby's past coming back to haunt her, Libby works swiftly and methodically to gain the evidence she needs and set up the fall of the powerful Senator-but at what cost to herself, to Libby, to the boy who loved Libby before she died, and the boy Frances loved?
A must read for all fans of the television show Revenge. I loved it and raced right through it. I thought the end was a little rushed, things clicked into place a little fast, but the build up was fantastic. I feel like this could have been stretched out into more than one book so we could get more details, more twists, more...revenge and consequences. There are definitely things left unanswered in the end (and I'm not talking about the epilogue) and personally, I'd love to see a sequel with the aftermath of Frances/Libby's revenge. I highly recommend.
If you are a fan of Ryan or a fan of a good revenge story, this is the book for you! An amazing read.
