This is an amazing read. Most authors like their main character to be loved and wonderful and nice...no way. Not here. Kathrin managed to create a strong, aggressive female character whose curiosity drives her to do many things and go many places. It's fantastic. Throughout the entire read, I found myself feeling what she felt. The main character, Keelin, is really well developed. She fights for what she believes in and doesn't let other opinions or rules stand in her way. She doesn't know who she is, physically, but she knows who she wants to be after all she goes through. Upon entering a world she despises because of how she was raised, Keelin finds herself doing many different things. She suffers so much, yet she grows from every loss. I love the main character because she is truly her own person, and Kathrin wasn't afraid to write it out.

The entire world is one worth delving into. It is so well described, I found myself unable to compare it to something I know, now. The imagery in this book created the world as I read, unfolding it until I saw the world as I would my backyard, familiar and vivid.

The plot is amazing because it's not something that just happens. It's gradual. It is a journey with constant intrigue because the main character learns, and we learn right along with her. Sometimes that can be boring, but this is far from it because she's experiencing a land for the first time, and it is as funny as it is dark and adventurous. This is an adventure you will definitely want to follow, not only for the incredible plot, but for the amazing character you get to take the journey with.

I usually don't read fantasy novels but my wife wanted me to read this one after she completed it and boy am I glad I did. Ms. Hutson did a wonderful job of not only building her main character Keelin but she also built the supporting characters and their surroundings up so well that I felt I was in the middle of the action. Which there was a lot of.

I look forward to the next book in this series and I hardly ever say that.

I had to give it a day before writing this review for this new Dark Fantasy by Kathrin Hutson. It's rare when a story eats at me to not only read it nonstop until I reached the end, but continue to force myself to remember to "sip and not gulp" it in its entirety. And that's how this masterpiece should be read; nice and slow in order to take in all the imagery, the well developed characters, the background scenery and the nooks and cranny that is the Daughter of the Drackan.

Hutson's ability to thread words together to bring to life a tale of courage, discovery, loss, love and death, in ways only true master storytellers can, is...well, I have no word for it. Words such as amazing, outstanding, brilliant...are trivial and doesn't come close to describe her writing. I couldn't put the book down, and when I had no choice, the story nagged at me constantly until I was able to return. The characters, those of human and drackan kind, are vivid and full of colors. Their fears, needs, wants, joy and frustration becomes yours and you will find disconnecting with them a difficult task.

You will discover Keelin and how she came to be raised by an elderly drackan. When she begins to have blackouts that she can't explain, the world of man pulls at her to find her answers. Her loyalty is tested, her fear becomes her strength. She becomes divided. In the world of drackan she is Keelin, in the world of man she is Kaht-Amvir. Two different women, one body and soul.

Keelin's story is a complex one, but is expertly told with ease. Her's is a story well captured and should be released over and over again by many. Ms. Hutson is a true storyteller.

There is a preview of the sequel included at the end that is so tantalizingly delicious and insanely cruel I wanted to reach out and strangle the storyteller. Well played, Ms. Hutson, well played.

Just when you think that you've read everything there is to within a genre, an author will come along and surprise the hell out of you. The story is refreshing and new. Very few times have I picked up a book and felt my heart pounding. The suspense was palpable every bit of the way. The story grabs you by the wrist and pulls you along from the very first sentence. I didn't want to put this book down at any point.

Mrs. Hutson is skillful in character development. You forget that these characters are on a page. She masterfully writes from several characters point of view which allows you to understand their motivations, drives, and dreams. They aspire to accomplish their life's work and they do so with zeal. Rarely have I seen as much thought and consideration poured into each character in a story. Even ancillary characters come through as lively as the main ones.

Plot is amazing. It is ruthless. Then again, so is the main character, but you love her for it. You will cheer for her all the way to the end. You will not want to see the last page coming because you will definitely want to read more. Thankfully, more novels are planned in the series, and I will be keeping my eye out for them. There is action, violence, self-discovery, epic battles with drackans and men. There is an allure to the main character that is not easily explained, but powerful.

I really can't recommend "Daughter of the Drackan" enough. You will miss out on one of the best fantasy novels out there if you continue on without buying it.
