The kingdom of Havenglade is also unique. I got sucked in by the map and kept flipping back and forth for a visual of where the hero, Laurena was located.
My favorite character is the little dragon Jolan. I recommend this book for anyone out there looking to find something new
As a reader I was surprised that the author wrote so much of this adventure while in Asia!!
I like this book and would recommend it to any fantasy lovers.
If you enjoy stories of Middle Earth, Narnia, or Game of Thrones, check this one out!
The basic plot is good, the change in pace fits with the changing events as the story unfolds. The problem though is threefold.
The characters are not well developed and are without depth. This results in the reader being unable to identify with any character or to empathise with any.
Scenes and events are described almost in a sterile manner and devoid from emotional content. The reader is consequently a mere onlooker with nothing to relate to or get excited about. In other words, there is not much of an impact.
There is also too much of almost accidental fortuitous events benefitting the main protagonist, i.e. the way Laurenta got bonded, the meeting with and developing relationship with Jolan, the meeting with Maylene and subsequent gifting by Maylene. These events are important, but for the most part do not have any effect on events in this book. It would appear to only start playing a major role in events forthcoming in future books in this series.
Bearing in mind this book is aimed more likely at senior middlegraders it is my opinion that it will be relatively interesting only for them. That's it.
I love a good story and one that is drenched with fantasy, where one can escape their everyday life and live vicariously through their heroes in literature. This is accomplished here.
Young Laurena is quickly relieved of both her parents within the span of a week. A kindly aunt opens her home to the newly orphaned preteen.
Laurena is quickly elevated from the humble ranks of her parentage and becomes a sorcerer's apprentice. Her rapid ascension reminds me of Anakin Skywalker.
Her story follows and years pass into awkward adolescence. Laurena's master is killed by a big bad, aka an evil wizard who is hell-bent on dominating the castle and kingdom for himself. That b*stard!!
Our fearless teenager with magical powers that grow stronger everyday gathers her strength and with help from a really kewl pet dragon puts an end to the reign of terror that evil wizard L. has in store for the poor kingdom.
An epilogue follows that has a major plot twist in the story alluding to some of the things that happened earlier in the book!
I believe that this is the first of a series and I want to find out what happens next.
