A Dead Daughter, the third book in the Jessica Huntington series, is a skillfully woven tapestry, with threads of chilling psychological thriller, cozy mystery, zany comedy, romance, and chronicle of a struggle with addiction.

The book jolts into action on the very first page, as a mentally unstable young woman holds Jessica at gunpoint on the precipice of a cliff. The suspense continues throughout the book, driven by unsolved mysteries and repeated attempts on Jessica’s life. Fortunately, Jessica and her friends have serious skills of their own, but are they enough to elude these relentless assassins?

It’s a pleasure to see Jessica Huntington’s character mature and grow. She devotes a lot less time to self-pity and “retail therapy” and a lot more to family and friends, a new career, and even some spiritual pursuits. Fortunately, she also retains those good qualities she already had in the earlier books: her fighting spirit, resourcefulness, intelligence, wit, and generosity.

Equally delightful is her warm circle of friends/associates--the “Cat Pack”—which has picked up a couple of intriguing new members they discovered along the way during previous escapades. At the heart of the pack is everyone’s favorite mother figure, the nurturing, funny, and feisty Bernadette. What reader of this series has NOT said “I need a Bernadette in my life!” (If you’re one of those, I highly recommend Love a Foot Above the Ground, the prequel about Bernadette as a young girl in Mexico and later a happy young newlywed working hard to educate herself; the story is so touching and the characters so real that the pages practically come to life in your hands.

I want Bernadette to come live with me. I wouldn’t expose her to anything more dangerous than a thieving raccoon, unlike the Huntingtons.

I admit I am a fan of Burke’s “Jessica Huntington” series. Her characters are fun and plausible. Since Jessica is an attorney, it makes sense that she would encounter some shady characters in the course of her work.

In A Dead Daughter Burke gives us a twist on the classic who-done-it. She exposes an unethical, manipulative psychologist and nicely kills him off in the first chapter. As for the psychologist’s corrupt businessman friend, she leaves us wondering right up until the end about what will happen to him.

In the middle of the book, we get to meet the Cat Pack, Jessica’s friends and employees who help her unravel the mystery around her while Bernadette serves up an always tempting buffet of savory dishes and her own brand of information gathering. Burke also serves up some humor with her mystery. I loved it when Jessica discovers her notoriety has gained her some fans. When Jessica graciously agrees to give a fan her autograph the “fan” blithers on about how much the autograph will be worth on ebay.

All in all, I recommend A Dead Daughter as a mystery with some unexpected twists, plausible plot, and fresh expression of the genre.

This episodic mystery series opens with fast action and sudden murder with out heroine almost losing her life with a death defying push off the side of a cliff. Ok... you had me at the first scream.

The author introduces us to a humorous cast that includes the "cat pack" and Jessica's parents (very emotionally stunted mother) and the "saintly" Bernadette who is more than a real mother to Jessica. I can't do justice conveying the depth of development the author had layered her characters with. Great job with clear well edited and effective story plotting. I was held enthralled to the very end.

I wish I had started with the original mystery in the series but they are made to stand alone. It's just more fun to read them all in order. I'm on the way out to my pool on this sunny holiday weekend and can't wait to start the original book in the series. I know I'm in for a can't miss holiday treat.

A Dead Daughter, by Anna Burke, is book 3 in the Jessica Huntington Desert Cities Mystery series. A Dead Daughter can be read as a standalone.
This was an exciting read. Jessica is a very strong woman and committed lawyer. Jessica survives being held at gun point on top of a mountain, and despite her life being in danger, Jessica is driven by the unsolved mysteries.

All the characters are well developed. Dr. Carr was a compelling sick individual. I adore the saintly Bernadette with a gun! Bernadette is one of my favorite characters of Burke. Bernadette is a beautiful character from Burke’s other wonderful novel, “Love a Foot Above the Ground.” The “Cat Pack” are an intriguing group of friends who provide Jessica support and shelter from threats.

This is very well-written. It is an amazing interwoven psychological thriller with romance, drug abuse, survival, and comedy. I was cheering for Jessica, a very uplifting book. Bravo!

If you enjoyed "A Dead Husband" and "A Dead Sister," you'll be certain to want to read "A Dead Daughter." Jessica and the Cat Pack stir up more trouble in this suspenseful novel. Once again Jessica finds herself in harm's way as her client's daughter drags her up a mountain at gunpoint. It's filled with tasty food, shopping sprees, and bad guys out to stop Jessica. You're in for a few surprises with Jessica's extended family. It's full of laughs (Lucy and Ethel moments), and plenty of suspense. Although it started out slow for me, with so much time spent introducing characters and reliving previous adventures--all while Jessica recovered in a hospital--the story ended up on a bang that reminds me of "Murder on the Orient Express."
