Editorial Reviews

Dave Koz is joined by a front line of top-notch horn players (Mindi Abair, Richard Elliot & Gerald Albright) to re-interpret an array of powerhouse horn-heavy songs made famous by Tower of Power, Chicago, EW&F, James Brown, Sly & The Family Stone, Ronnie Laws, Blood Sweat & Tears and others. Three of the world's best horn arrangers are contributing their talents: Greg Adams (Tower of Power) and Tom Scott. Topping it off is a sax-only rendition of "Take Five" with Gordon Goodwin offering his arrangement to the quartet.

Yes, the title of this album is Summer Horns, and YES it is perfect for a hot sunny day. Luckily, the production and musicality is so top notch that it will also be good in the chilly grips of winter. Even though it's inevitable that winter is coming, I can already see the fire place crackling and this CD playing over the system.

Dave Koz is always excellent on the sax, so I was really over the moon when I saw that he's being joined by Mindi, Richard and Gerald. All amazing musicians in their own right, the players on this album really have a great cohesive sound together. The album is upbeat and solid all the way through. Good selection of songs although I wish there was more from The Beatles because Got To Get You Into My Life was my favorite track. Get this CD! You won't be disappointed.

Kudos to Koz - he had a great idea for the album - recreating the funk sax/horn sections of the 70s with the latest and greatest players. It's a very enjoyable listening - I'm giving it 4 stars for fun and quality (and saving 5 stars for those desert island must-have discs). The best part of the disc is the quality of playing and production - this is a step above the usual smooth jazz in that the solos are crisp and the tunes have a subtle swing that sounds natural and appealing. If you were around in the era that you heard some of these songs, then you probably know *all* of these songs. The format is worth listening to a few times (or definitely adding to your smooth streaming list if you choose to listen that way), and there are some nice surprises like a Michael McDonald vocal. Favorites of mine include the "power swing" of Always There, the subtle Take Five, McDonald's vocals on So Very Hard to Go, and the impressively interpreted God Bless the Child with Jeffrey Osborne singing. He's on tour, sounds fun for the summer.

What's to say? You can't go wrong putting these four sax players together and turning them loose on some great summer songs. All four are superior with their craft, yet have their own individuality that brings it all together. If you listen close enough, you can make out each artist as they are playing the lead on a song.

Love this CD, play it a lot as I travel in my car. I've been listening to jazz for only a few years now and wonder how come it took me so long. I got into jazz when I brought a new car and started my XM radio. I'm a fan of Watercolors and this is how I learn what I've been missing out on for so long.

Take a trip down memory lane with this one. These are some of your favorite tunes, tastefully rearranged and delivered by some top notch sax players. If you're the type of person who always hummed the melody but never bothered to learn the words then this disc is for you. It's easy on the ears and the few tunes that do feature vocals are performed with the tunes in mind--the vocalists are top notch. These guys deliver the goods. Play this disc anywhere-car, home or beach--it's enjoyable

My Mom was visiting from Florida and in planning for some summer activities, I asked what she would be interested in doing. The 1st this she said was "I really want to see Dave Koz in concert!" I had no idea there was a concert, so I looked it up. Sure enough, he was going to be at the Hollywood Bowl. So I got the tickets and we went. WOW! What a great concert with Dave, Mindy Aber, Richard Elliot & Gerald Albright! They had that place on their feet clapping, moving and swaying!
1st thing Mom said at the end "I want this CD!" So, I just had to get it for her. :-)
What a beautiful mix of music these talented Artist put together on this CD. I highly recommend it.

This release just makes me smile. Big smile. Re-arrangements of all the big "horn songs" from my youth, done superbly. If you like BST, TofP, Chicago, etc, then you will love this.
