About the Author

With more than a million books in print, David D. Busch is the world's #1 selling digital camera guide author, and the originator of popular digital photography series like David Busch's Pro Secrets and David Busch's Quick Snap Guides. He has written more than a dozen hugely successful guidebooks for Canon and Canon digital SLR models, as well as many popular books devoted to dSLRs, including Mastering Digital SLR Photography, Second Edition, and Digital SLR Pro Secrets. As a roving photojournalist for more than twenty years, he illustrated his books, magazine articles, and newspaper reports with award-winning images. He's operated his own commercial studio, suffocated in formal dress while shooting weddings-for-hire, and shot sports for a daily newspaper and upstate New York college. His photos and articles have appeared in Popular Photography & Imaging, The Rangefinder, The Professional Photographer, and hundreds of other publications. He has also reviewed dozens of digital cameras for CNet and Computer Shopper, and his advice has been featured in National Public Radio's "All Tech Considered." When About.com named its top five books on Beginning Digital Photography, debuting at the #1 and #2 slots were Busch's Digital Photography All-In-One Desk Reference for Dummies and Mastering Digital Photography. During the past year, he's had as many as five of his books listed in the Top 20 of Amazon.com's Digital Photography Bestseller list--simultaneously! Busch's 120-plus other books published since 1983 include bestsellers like David Busch's Quick Snap Guide to Digital SLR Lenses. Visit his website at http://www.dslrguides.com.

I was a bit cautious about buying this book because a number of other reviews claimed it contained inacuracies, particularly in relation to the Camera's flash capability. Perhaps this book has been revised since those reviews but my copy makes it clear that the flash is an accessory.
Overall I found this book to be well written, comprehensive and generally easy to follow. The layout is excellent and it contains quite a few helpful tips. I would recommend it to anyone who is not a professional photographer and who just wants to get a better understanding of the features of the camera. An excellent guide.

I have purchased all the books I could find on the Canon 5D Mark ll and this is by far the best for both content and quality of the physical book. If this had been published sooner I would have saved some $ because it really explains things very well and is very well written. The camera does so many things I was not familiar with and David Busch does an excellent job in his explanations. Also the book is in full color and uses excellent quality paper. This makes the book rather heavy for carrying around in your bag, but it still does not preclude me from having it with me when I am out in the field. I highly recommend this fine volume for anyone who owns the Mark ll or is considering a purchase of one. By the way, the camera is fantastic as well.

This is the first book I was so anxious to get that I preordered it. I am not disappointed. While anticipating the release of Busch's book, I studied other books by various authors on the 5D Mark II as well as David's Busch's books on other camera models. I knew this was the "one." There is really nothing more to add to the earlier reviews except I agree wholeheartedly with every positive comment. I might add however, that as a senior citizen, I appreciate the type style used and the very readable examples and illustrations. The excellent quality of the paper is also what would be expected in a manual for the wonderful 5D Mark II. The manual which came with the camera was frustrating to say the least and now I am confident that I am going to be able to utilize most if not all, of the advanced features of this wonderful camera. Although I had used a Canon 35mm for years and was familiar with photograpic techniques, this camera and this manual have opened up a new world. After a gresat deal of research, it is satisfying to know that I chose the right camera and the right manual to go with it. Thanks, David.

The owners manual that comes with the 5D Mk II does little more than tell you about the buttons and menus. This book does so much more. It's better organized, and with nearly 500 pages of information, tells you why you should use each setting and control, while relating them directly to the most important dSLR concepts.

I love the logical format this book follows. The earlier chapters briefly introduce all the important features, so you can immediately begin using your camera, without bogging you down in details. For example, things like bracketing are explained with simple instructions for setting bracketing. If you want to know more, including why you should use bracketing to get the best exposure, or how to use bracketing to create HDR effects, the author refers you to the chapter that offers the additional detail. That's much less complicated than the manual that comes with the camera, which frequently uses multiple cross references that have you jumping all around to learn how to do something simple. With this book, it's "basics first" and "advanced concepts later," which makes it far superior to the hodge-podge that is the nearly useless manual that comes with the 5D Mk II.

I looked at a couple of the small pocket manuals also available for this camera. This book goes far beyond all of them in explaining why you'd want to make each setting, and how to use the features of the Canon 5D Mk II to improve your exposures and take better pictures. The large section on using Picture Styles came in very helpful. I did not find this much information on using custom Picture Styles in the Canon manual, nor in the other 5D Mk II guides I looked at.

It seems that somewhere in the past, a good text was developed along with a good set of images, but with release of subsequent models of cameras, that same text and set of non-camera-specific images are used as the majority of the base for the newer books. If the reader has never seen one of David Busch's earlier works, he/she may well be impressed with the amount of information provided, and at an attractive price. However, without significant prior knowledge of Canon cameras, the reader may not recognize the technical errors introduced by the failure to adequately edit those references to functions or features of the base document that are either not available or that are different from the EOS 5D Mark II.

This is a good guide indeed. It serves the needs of multiple segments of the 5D Mark II users, from beginners through advanced second-system owners. At the introductory level, the book literally hand-holds the reader and evolves him/her through the gamut of DSLR and full-frame photography using Mark II along the way. For the intermediate user, there are provided many procedures for quick grasp of the custom functions and their changing-on-demand, while also demystifying the internals of the system. It also provides chapters on lenses, speedlites, and other accessories that can help the photographer in a hurry. For advanced or second-time system buyers, this is a good reference to have handy and also to share with an assistant in bringing him/her up to speed with the various functionalities and amazing features of this marvelous machine, the 5D II.

Being an ardent believer in user/instruction manuals, I started there but the original factory-supplied manual accompanying the 5D II was rather pedantic and taxing on time, memory, and connectivity. I was determined to read it through in a cross-Atlantic flight and had to dicipline my mind to peruse that manual - not to mention the demand on my eyes by the pithy printing (don't forget your glasses, perhaps also +1 diopter boosters). I made many marks in the manual but also started losing track of the details which were unconnected along the way. On the return journey, I started David Busch's Guide and could not let it down, so many times feeling like getting my Mark II out with me in the plane to try the settings and creative alternatives possible. It was an easy read, helpful guide - like an encouraging mentor by my side.
