About the Author
With more than a million books in print, David D. Busch is the world's #1 selling digital camera guide author, and the originator of popular digital photography series like David Busch's Pro Secrets and David Busch's Quick Snap Guides. He has written more than a dozen hugely successful guidebooks for Canon and Canon digital SLR models, as well as many popular books devoted to dSLRs, including Mastering Digital SLR Photography, Second Edition, and Digital SLR Pro Secrets. As a roving photojournalist for more than twenty years, he illustrated his books, magazine articles, and newspaper reports with award-winning images. He's operated his own commercial studio, suffocated in formal dress while shooting weddings-for-hire, and shot sports for a daily newspaper and upstate New York college. His photos and articles have appeared in Popular Photography & Imaging, The Rangefinder, The Professional Photographer, and hundreds of other publications. He has also reviewed dozens of digital cameras for CNet and Computer Shopper, and his advice has been featured in National Public Radio's "All Tech Considered." When About.com named its top five books on Beginning Digital Photography, debuting at the #1 and #2 slots were Busch's Digital Photography All-In-One Desk Reference for Dummies and Mastering Digital Photography. During the past year, he's had as many as five of his books listed in the Top 20 of Amazon.com's Digital Photography Bestseller list--simultaneously! Busch's 120-plus other books published since 1983 include bestsellers like David Busch's Quick Snap Guide to Digital SLR Lenses. Visit his website at http://www.dslrguides.com.

UPDATE: Have now shot day and night scenes (with excellent guidance in the book), fireworks at night, "macro" closeups of flowers and insects...all the things that my big DSLR camera can do (providing you change a few lenses). But with the author's guidance, all of these challenging shots are clearly within the capability of this camera. I would never have discovered all this without the guidance contained within the book.
After mostly absorbing what I've read I'm amazed at how many features and permutations of features this camera has. I suspect that you will too. The Canon guidebook isn't organized in a way that will clearly provide this sort of information to the average user. On the other hand, many of the features and permutations are likely to never be used by me.
As far as I know, to date, this is the only non-Canon guide to the G16. I'd recommend it.
The manual is complicated just like the camera and DOES NOT have all of the information that you would expect it to. Certain features, like the different video image stabilization settings, just aren't explained. This book provides the additional info that you need. Canon obviously supplied the author with material that isn't available anywhere else. Trust me, I've scoured the internet looking. Again, bad apple Canon!
This book is organized pretty well but if you are an experience photographer, you'll have to wade through some basic stuff on picture taking to get what you're looking for. Still, it's worth buying.
The only thing that kept me from giving it 5 stars was the price. Much of it's contents should have been free with the camera. It's one of the most expensive books I've purchased in a long time.
Thanks again for writing this book and explaining how this camera can be used. Some of us are not as smart about this as others.
The author Davis D. Bunch, goes above and beyond explaining the features of this great camera in his book: much better than the manual I downloaded from the Canon web-site. This book is well written and very easy to follow.
