Great pieces- track numbers/titles are wrong

I went to read along with the pieces on 1st violin and the first cd tracks were already mislabeled. They were from Automne and not the 5th as labelled if it were cd2 and not cd1. I will put up an updated correct track list when I am do e playing through them all.
That said, it is an excellent performance and recording and another set of chamber works that deserve to be played and heard.

Another neglected master

It continues to amaze me how much truly great music is out there once you get away from the overhyped and overrated "masters" such as Beethoven and Brahms. Felicien David is yet another example of this. After finding and enjoying this disc of excepts "four seasons" at Academy, I ordered two other discs of his chamber music and I'm quite enchanted. I'm especially happy that Cristophe Coin's second disc on Laborie doesn't duplicate any of the other recorded chamber music. Between the old Marco Polo, the Ambroisie, and the Laborie discs you can get all of his quartets and piano trios. I haven't heard the MP (they also have a disc of solo piano) but I can recommend the others quite highly.

Little-known but brilliant

These actually are quintets, which include a bass part. Apparently David composed 24 of these works, six for each season. The Laborie discs include only 16 and it's a shame, considering the quality of the music, that the other 8 are not recorded. Nevertheless, this music is engaging, lyrical, and masterfully composed for chamber ensemble. And the Laborie sound is stunning - each instrument is vividly presented, especially the underlying bass line. Suggestion: take a break from the chamber warhorses (as wonderful as they are) and give this CD a listen. You'll be enchanted, entertained and you'll want an encore!

Tuneful Seasons

Felicien David is enjoying a mini-revival of sorts. His operas are being rediscovered in France and the U.S. and a lot of his orchestral music is coming out on CD. This two CD set of his "Quatre Saisons" sounds like pleasant salon music of the day (1876), no rediscovered masterpiece, but nice enough for casual listening. Nice performance too.
