I first saw this as s kid and taped it. Hadn’t seen this for about 25 years. I saw it on Amazon for a great price and remembered liking it, having it taped. I put it in and my reaction to it as an adult was chilling as it never had been. It felt like a story more possible now than ever. I was more emotionally invested and it seemed like a foretelling, a prediction. I’m VERY glad to have purchased this for my collection. I hope I’m wrong and that NOTHING like this will ever come to pass. Maybe with maturity, cynicism and more knowledge of world politics and the very real dangers in the world beginning with 9/11 to the present it now seems more prescient. A very believable and terrifying film. Seeing the late actors Patrick Swayze, Powers Boothe, and Harry Dean Stanton also gave it an air of melancholy as well. Also, remembering that this was Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey’s first film together was interesting. This was the first film released rated PG-13. Also, like Keanu Reeves I have never been a Patrick Swayze fan, for his acting OR looks. I just didn’t understand the attraction. Swayze’s final scene in this film is annoyingly bad. It almost ruins the movie for me. He and Keanu were always bad actors, who, because women thought they were so hot, kept getting roles better suited for almost anybody else. Picture and sound on this blu ray release are great and 1/4 of the price of Shout Factory’s release which only added a 15 minute retrospective with no one in the film and reversible cover with the great original poster art (which is the only reason I almost bought their version instead of this one). But, alas, the price difference was too great to justify buying the Shout release. This release is more than sufficient.

Red Dawn is one of my favorite movies of the 80s. Watching it today, it still holds up pretty well despite a couple of rough edges. It features a all-star cast with Swayze, Sheen, Michael-Hall as well as Powers Boothe in their heyday. I remember seeing Red Dawn in the 80s and one of the reviews stated that the story was based on a fantasy of Russian and Cuban soldiers invading the United States. Looking at the current times, that story isn't so far-fetched now especially considering the decadent state of Washington and the horrible mess that is the White House.

5* brought back some fantastic 80s memories and made me miss Patrick Swayze and Powers Boothe.

... that a handful of teenagers could have held off Soviet and Cuban military professionals for so long. The rugged Western scenery is the best part of this movie. The dark emotions of anger, grief and despair on the part of the Americans (both young and old) were very moving, really to the point of being unsettling. As I write this at the end of September 2018... one has to wonder about the real possibility that such a scenario could actually befall this country given how much the world has changed in just the last two years.

My 13 year old son kept raving about the "new" Red Dawn. I told him to sit with me and watch this version and if he liked the new one better I would watch the new one. Needless to say - I haven't seen the new one yet. :) If you were a kid in the 80's like me then you know that this movie was something that in the back of all of our minds could happen. I know that I wanted the commies to attack my school so we could fight back. Our mascot was the Rams so it wouldn't have been near as cool as shouting "Wolverines!". Anyway - very good movie and I was thrilled to watch it again after all of these years.

Pros:
Some good acting; I'm thinking of Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen who played it very differently, but whom were each real in their own way.
Cons:
No real beginning to the story to draw you in. Just words quickly flashed on the screen.
What there was of a story didn't make much sense. You have to suspend a lot of disbelief.
No real relationships were developed within the film.
No real ending. Again, just a short voiceover. It's a little depressing, like the end of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
Overall:
It gets your blood pumping but for no purpose. It's ultimately is a waste of time.

I saw Red Dawn when first released in VHS and again , the 2012 version on Blu Ray with Chris Hemsworth and again the original 1984 Blu Ray version about the US being invaded by the Soviet Union , Cuban & Nicaraguan Forces , set on War War 3 , paratroopers descend on a High School in Colorado and a group of students escape waging an all out gorilla war so as to save their town with a great cast , Patrick Swayze - Charlie Sheen - C. Thomas Howell - Powers Booth - Lea Thompson - Harry Dean Stanton - Jennifer Grey - Ben Johnson - Ron O'neal - William Smith with good story line , action and not a bad picture and sound , no menu , special features o subtitles , Good Movie .

It's a good film on several levels.
First, as a look back to see actors who later became major stars. Second, to see such a film made in pre-CGI days. I haven't seen the re-make, but so many films today feature really ridiculous numbers of people in computer-generated battlefield encounters. This film went the other way, with seemingly, a dozen or so parachutists being a major invasion force. If I were invading the US, naturally I'd take out a school first.
Film quality wasn't up to today's standards of course, but was very acceptable. Sadly the 4:3 format hadn't been well converted to wide screen and Swayze and others looked a tad squashed in the process.
The proposition that such a small group of young people could wage such effective guerrilla war is far-fetched, but to enjoy this story, you need to suspend reality. The acting was pretty good.
In summary, with some flaws, it still stands above so many films that are produced today. Worth a watch.

Bought both versions, so that I could compare them. I must say I really preferred this version rather than the Chris Hemsworth version. The newer version is more up to date with North Korea as the villians of the peace but sadly it just does not cut it.

I could vaguely remember this film from my youth, so I thought why not at the price. It was everything I remember, cheesy acting, Soviet paranoia,American Bravery winning out.
It is a thoroughly enjoyable romp, The plot of a Soviet/Cuban? attack on the US is so far fetched, but America at the time would have believed it possible. Has anyone seen Doomsday Preppers on NatGeo, that lets you know what the state of mind of some US citizens is today.
What bothers me is I cannot place the Russian villain, he was in loads in the 80's and always a bad guy.
WOLVERINES!!!!!! Got to love it.
