The author also uses news articles and wiki articles to attempt to fill in and explain the state of the world. Further, he jumps back and forth in the time line. The world that this book exists in has embraced the use of marijuana and banned the use of alcohol, forcing abusers of alcohol to be hunted down and subjected to horrendous procedures. Probably some kind of political statement but I just found it weird.
Combining the use of the news / wiki articles, with the jump back and forth in the timeline, I found it very hard to follow the story much less develop any amount of care for any of the characters.
When the story was finally over (and it is not that long), I was disappointed with the ending and vowed not to attempt to read the second book and to delete both from my Kindle. Sorry Mr. Grafton - better luck next time.
For those who live or have lived in eastern Kansas, and who have absorbed the sights and smells of the subtly stunning landscape, the novels offer an extra layer of authenticity. The "hovroads" are the interstate highways we know, but of the future. The bars may be one you have frequented in the past or currently. And the poetry? It's about as real as it gets, even if it does hark from just the other side of Stateline Road in Kansas City! For all other readers, these books are a great way to get a taste of "antique" eastern Kansas culture, fast-forwarded several decades and seen through the literary eyes of Grafton.
And the story itself is one that is interesting, exciting, full of turns you don't expect, and peppered with humor such as: "A 600 acre farm was barely enough room for the borg to achieve full velocity over dry ground, let alone across a muddy field pock-marked with cyborg carcasses and pumpkin guts." [From Absorption: Phase 03 (The Eighteenth Shadow).] The intelligence and creativity of the author are apparent in the details that tie the story together through the criss-crossing lives of the individual characters. This smart, funny, and action-packed thriller will leave you hungering for his next installment!
