This is a work of absolute genius unlike anything I have ever been fortunate enough to read before. It's a futuristic high fantasy true crime spy thriller in the style of Tom Clancy doing his level best to edit the sexism and self-infatuation out of a Robert A. Heinlein-written Victor Hugo homage where Fantine gets to be the hero, but still has to be the Fantine for whom nothing ever goes right. If you love any genre of fiction, if you love yourself, you owe it to yourself to give this book a chance.
This is why I almost didn’t download this book. How could I possibly read and enjoy a book that features Sentient Mac & Cheese. And I felt that way until it squealed ‘Mommy!’ and jumped out of the fridge.
And now I want my own pet macaroni and cheese. In fact, every time our little mac friend is on the page, my hard-hearted soul just goes…squee.
Aside from my little Squee friend, this is actually a really good piece of urban fantasy. It’s dark, edgy, and hilarious. Don’t get me wrong – a lot of what happens here is utterly ridiculous. But it’s ridiculous in a well-written and highly entertaining way. There’s also a very hot romance, though at times it’s a little too Me Tarzan You Jane for me.
This book was a surprise. Don’t let the mac and cheese scare you.
It’s creative, funny, and still manages to be solid & edgy urban fic. Shocked the heck out of me!
And then the Dae come. At first Alexa is pretty sure that she's been drugged. Hell, I'm pretty sure she's been drugged! But she manages until she finally realizes she isn't drugged and that a fire-breathing werewolf really did kill the guy - a small dragon - she was supposed to be gathering information on. Since Alexa doesn't have a Dae and is one of the few, if not only, normal humans left, she's at a distinct disadvantage. She has no way of knowing what exactly is going on unlike the humans that do have a Dae. Which, of course, is why she thought she was drugged.
Anyways, this book really does have it all. Drugs, prostitutes, schooling, dragons, vampires, a unicorn, hallucinations, sex, kidnapping, arson, revenge, dystopian setting that just gets worse - you name it! It's fast paced, hilarious, action-packed, and just delightful! If you enjoy dystopian or post-apocalyptic stories mixed with humor, then this is the book for you.
And aren't you luck? It's just the start of a nice new series!
Definitely want to know how her story continues because there are at least 2 that you want to see hurt for what they did to her. And of course Colby is evolving (how can that be?), as well as learning more about the Dae themselves and Rob in particular.
The writing was good and the grammar correct. While I don't buy many kindle books, because I like paperbacks this was definitely worth picking up.
