The title character in “Dawn Girl” is the latest victim of a particularly sadistic serial killer. He tortures his victims, then places their bodies on beaches where passers-by will soon discover them in the early morning. However, the local police in Palm Beach, FL, don’t realize that they have a serial killer at work because his previous victims have been few and far between. But when FBI whiz investigator Tess Winnett enters the case, she soon discovers the killer’s pattern. The book then becomes a race to the finish as Tess tries to find the villain’s lair before he disposes of his newest victim.
This plot isn’t very original. Viewers of the TV series “Criminal Minds” saw the show’s investigators catch dozens of similar killers over the years. The only difference between “Criminal Minds” and “Dawn Girl” is that Winnett is a one-woman team. She occasionally consults with the local police, a profiler, and a coroner. But, for the most part, she pursues the investigation on her own, flying from state to state interviewing witnesses and ultimately discovering the giveaway clue. Both her logic and her interviewing technique are flawless.
Although Winnett’s detective skills are near perfect, her interpersonal skills leave much to be desired. She rubs nearly everyone she meets the wrong way, and her superiors keep reprimanding her for not following procedure. This type of brilliant yet abrasive detective has been around since the days of Sherlock Holmes. The author provides a bit of shading for Winnett’s personality with a surprise reveal late in the book. Mostly, though, she is just a two-dimensional stereotype. As for the rest of the characters, they struggle even to rise to the level of a single dimension. In particular, the killer seems more like a psychological case study than an actual boogeyman.
Despite the ill-developed characters and overly familiar plot, “Dawn Girl” is entertaining, at least for fans of either the genre or similar TV shows. The book has few action or description scenes. Instead, the story progresses primarily through various conversations. Fortunately, Leslie Wolfe is good at creating compelling dialogue and disguising information dumps. Unlike some similar books in which the detective seemingly pulls the right answers out of the air, in “Dawn Girl,” Winnett lays out her thought processes in fascinating detail. The author has also done extensive research into topics like various arcane drugs and toxins. The result is a lot like viewing a true-crime documentary with Winnett serving as narrator.
“Dawn Girl” reads like a typical episode of a well-made police procedural. It’s the first novel in a series featuring Tess Winnett (I have read none of the others), so later books may provide more character detail. For now, the case is far more interesting than the characters, interesting enough to keep readers’ attention. “Dawn Girl” is literary comfort food for crime novel fans, but the author presents this dish well.
FBI Special Agent Tess Winnett becomes involved in a crime case that seems to be the work of maybe a serial killer as a dead woman is found on the beach all trussed up under a life guard station. Though Tess might have to step on a few toes to find out what is going on as she is assigned to work with two police detectives on the case. Whatever she has to do she will do to see the job done and if she has to muddle up something she will to find out where the path takes her.
The police detectives seem to be out of their depth when Tess becomes more involved in the case as she seems to go above and beyond to find out what kind of trail the killer has left as it seems that this murder is not the first and it is going to be up to Tess to find out who else the killer has murdered.
That is about all I can give on a backstory without giving away spoilers, so if you want to know more you will need to read the book!
Thoughts:
I love this character, Tess Winnett as she seems to take charge and doesn't let anything stand in her way to get the job done. This is my second book by this author and I really enjoyed the writing style along with the fast pace of the story. I have the rest of this series with Tess Winnett on my kindle and will continue with the series in the future. Giving this book four "Killer Thriller" stars!
Top reviews from other countries

I was a little unsure as a passage featured in the synopsis mentioned sand a few times too many for me and it came across as a little repetitive and not very professional then another passage in the book was similar near the start with darkness being written 3 times in one paragraph but it only happened those couple of times and that was it.
At one time she wrote glossed and I'd have written glazed, averting where I'd use avoiding and revolved not evolved. There were the odd apostrophe mistakes, mainly writing dollar's and not dollars' but the biggest ouch moment was writing sites and not sights !! That's pretty good going, though, these days.
I liked Tess. She can be bloody rude but she also takes time out to help other, newer police personnel with their careers which I approved of. BUT I didn't like how she spoke to poor Gary at times. I hope he also features in the next story and perhaps she'll be a lot less hard on him. She is definitely very good at her job and I like the way she thinks and deduces what's happening in a crime. The description the author gave us of an encounter with Tess and a lady called Rose was lovely, if sad.
I'd never heard of anyone answering a phone the way Gary does......I highlighted these a couple of times, such as "Go for Michowsky." It must be a done thing there. Another was when Tess says "Thanks much, Cat" without the very and again, I'm not sure if that's an Americanism or not. The same with the mention of a hammock. It clearly means something else than the thing hanging between trees that I know over there !!
I'll definitely be reading more of this series, I must say. It was full of action, has some funny moments and some proper murderation so kept my attention easily.

This felt more 'fresh' somehow.
Characters were fleshed out nicely as well.
Will definitely read more by this author.
