Draco is immortal which he saw everybody he’s ever loved die. Now he lives as a recluse until he found Rose sleeping in his chicken coop. Having powers herself makes getting close to people rather difficult. Rose’s brother and her need to get Draco to help them save human kind. Can they convince him? Will he risk everything and get close to Rose?
This story was not a lengthy book but packed with awesomeness. It was straight to the point and no unnecessary details that sometimes tend to drag a story out. It was entertaining and engaging.
Story told in a dual POV with a promise for another story with another character. Rose & Draco get their HEA.
The Plot: Dawn signifies the rise of the heroes. Draco has been living a lonely existence, having lost many during his time as an immortal. He has vowed to live a solitary life, until he meets Rose. Rose has powers of empathy, while her brother, Phillip, can see the future. Their lives entwine and Draco has to make a decision to stay the shell of a man he was, or to embark on a journey to combine their powers for good against a darkness threatening mankind and those with special abilities.
I have to applaud Jessica for this one. She has written a fabulously fun, witty "superhero" type book for adults. This one combined a well developed world with an intriguing cast of characters, danger, intrigue, passion, and the paranormal. I really enjoyed the writing and world building. I was immediately drawn in to the story and kept wanting more. I didn't even mind the sex scenes (my regular readers how I feel about sex scenes, and these were incredibly steamy). The plot of the story was fun and kind of reminded me of the new television show, Gifted, and the characters were very entertaining.
Rose intrigued me throughout the book. She was curious and innocent, but also had a dark side hiding within. She had an amazing ability, and was quite like-able for me at times, but also sometimes annoying with her choices and actions. That made her feel real and intriguing to read. She had depth and wasn't just one dimensional. I also really admired her confidence.
Phillip was a sweet, humorous character. I adored him as a perfect big brother and loved his ability. He was definitely not a typical "hero". He felt like a real person with his personality and his adorable "nerdiness".
And, of course, we have Draco. Draco was dreamy. Draco was alluring and mysterious. He added such depth and passion to the story, and the book would have been lost without him. I enjoyed his character the most and am looking forward to reading more of him in the rest of the series!
All in all, I though the book had a nice pace. The plot was fun, interesting, and suspenseful, and the story background, though I wish it had more, was unique and captivating. I do wish the story had had a little more going on, and had a shorter sex scene (totally a personal preference on not usually enjoying graphic sex scenes), but I still really enjoyed it, was hooked enough to finish it in one sitting, and am looking forward to the next book.
Thank you to the author for sending me a free e-ARC in exchange for my honest review!
While I thought the writing style was more simplistic than I'm used to, I really enjoyed the shorter, to the point paragraphs and dialogue. I loved that even though this book was a bit of a science fiction, meets superheroes, meets dystopian... the author didn't spend a lot of time writing filler or background information that made me want to skim. I find that to be a big problem in these types of books.
Really the only bug issues I had was that Phillip had been preparing for what's coming for a while - that was apparent when he showed them their hero "base"... I wonder how Rose didn't pick up on any of it seeing as how she connects to the emotional side of things? It was certainly interesting to see how their twin connection worked, and how that affected their powers. I felt like some of the 'reveals' in the story should of happened a little earlier than they did, for pacing purposes... but over all I really enjoyed the story. It ended well, and I can see how the over arching storyline will connect it to another book. I am very interested in seeing what happens next.
**I received a copy of this book from the author to read and review honestly. This does not affect my opinion in any way.
