An award-winning astronomer and physicist’s spellbinding and urgent call for a new Enlightenment and the recognition of the preciousness of life using reason and curiosity—the foundations of science—to study, nurture, and ultimately preserve humanity as we face the existential crisis of climate change.
Since Copernicus, humanity has increasingly seen itself as adrift, an insignificant speck within a large, cold universe. Brazilian physicist, astronomer, and winner of the 2019 Templeton Prize Marcelo Gleiser argues that it is because we have lost the spark of the Enlightenment that has guided human development over the past several centuries. While some scientific efforts have been made to overcome this increasingly bleak perspective—the ongoing search for life on other planets, the recent idea of the multiverse—they have not been enough to overcome the core problem: we’ve lost our moral mission and compassionate focus in our scientific endeavors.
Gleiser argues that we’re using the wrong paradigm to relate to the universe and our position in it. In this deeply researched and beautifully rendered book, he calls for us to embrace a new life-centric perspective, one which recognizes just how rare and precious life is and why it should be our mission to preserve and nurture it. The Dawn of a Mindful Universe addresses the current environmental and scientific impasses and how the scientific community can find solutions to them.
Gleiser’s paradigm rethinks the ideals of the Enlightenment, and proposes a new direction for humanity, one driven by human reason and curiosity whose purpose is to save civilization itself. Within this model, we can once again see ourselves as the center of the universe—the place where life becomes conscious—and regain a clear moral compass which can be used to guide both science and the politics around it.

Bewertet in den USA am2. September 2023An exceptional book. At a critical time in humanity’s relationship with our planet, Marcelo Gleiser offers a radical—and hopeful—new perspective on life on Earth that is simultaneously scientific and deeply spiritual. Contrary to the modern scientific narrative that astronomy, cosmology, and astrobiology have relegated Earth to a place of cosmic unimportance, Gleiser proposes the opposite: that human life is a fundamentally unique phenomenon in the Universe and that this elevates our planet to “a sacred realm that deserves respect and veneration.” A beautifully written call to action to preserve and heal our precious planet and its abundant life forms.

Bewertet in den USA am27. August 2023Gleiser offers a different take on the future: instead of the doomsday report that we are used to, he proposes a rethinking of what it means to being human in the 21st century, with 8 billion people on a finite planet. He writes with great clarity: the science is accessible and the prose is often lyrical and inspiring. I highly recommend this book, a unique blend of science, philosophy and secular spirituality.
It has all the marking of a best seller.

Bewertet in den USA am24. Juli 2024This is an outstanding presentation of perceptive, sensitive, and sensible observations and ideas for our era of planetary crisis. In my view, it is impossible to overstate the value of this concise presentation of practical and spiritual recommendations for humanity's reconnection to nature writ large. I urge you to read it in conjunction with The Blind Spot which Gleiser co-authored.
Please take the time to read the publisher's overview and the various review blurbs for synopsis. It's one of those books that leaves one in a state of vigorous enthusiasm for sharing and recommending.

Bewertet in den USA am3. September 2023What an extraordinary book! A must read for our time, offering not just hope but a path forward for a better future for humanity and for our planet. Very accessible writing, combining science, philosophy and spirituality in an original and lyrical way. Highly recommend it. Cant wait to read it again.

Bewertet in den USA am31. August 2023Author is great, subject is great. So what is the problem? It is an excellent essay. But not a 17$worth book. Iam sorry. If the price would be more reasonable, then I would give 4 stars. It is not fair for the distinguished author to be missled like this by publisher. So the rating is for the publisher, not for the author to be fare. Best regards.

Bewertet in den USA am16. September 2023An engaging topic, but the book is unfortunately riddled with straw man arguments. Life on Earth can be special and sacred whether or not life is rare or abundant elsewhere in the universe.
Or take the statement “When science banned the gods from the world, it opened it to human plunder.” The argument is backwards. The gods that science banned were created in our own image: there were gods of war, racist gods, gods that demanded sacrifices and violence. It is science and reason that led to the insights that all humans are equally deserving of respect and freedom, not the gods that science banned.

Bewertet in den USA am26. August 2023Often, I have rationalized my own occasional bouts with nihilism as a rational component of my own perceived insignificance in the grand scheme of the universe.
However, my thoughts after reading Gleiser’s take here couldn’t be further than the truth. Even as small of a voice as we all feel to have within our own communities and societies, how important that voice is as a collective. As far as we know, there is nothing else close to us resembling our voice, and as a consequence, we have a responsibility to ourselves to rise above it all.
A wonderful read!

Bewertet in den USA am28. November 2023The author is an excellent astronomer, and the detailed history of our understanding of the cosmos going back before ancient Greece is very informative and educational.
The chapters on our understanding of distant planets orbiting other stars, and the search for life outside our planet is also spot on and enlightening. I was hoping this book would go somewhere profound.
The author somehow misses the fact that thousands of years ago, The Buddha and other 'indigenous people' as he calls them, came to the correct understanding that there is only one lifeform on the Earth, DNA life, in millions of variations while all one continuation, and that we do not exist without the Earth itself, and the moon, and the sun, and the entire Universe exactly as it is. Humanity has known that we are one with all life, and with the Universe, for thousands of years.
Call it enlightenment, or self realization, but those people somehow came to the correct conclusions without science and without understanding of DNA or the atoms or the extent of the cosmos.
And here is the key that is missing from the book: they knew how to live accordingly, in their own time, and today. No one has to tell them.
Life on Earth has existed for billions of years. It will continue for billions of years and it will continue to evolve. There is nothing anyone has to do to fix it, or change it, or save it. And when life ends on Earth, it will continue throughout the Universe in billions of galaxies. No manifesto is required, personally or globally. The Universe did just fine before you were born, it will be just fine after you are gone.
Have a cup of tea, watch the sun rise, be a part of the miracle of life however you feel is right for you.
The accumulative 13.8 billion year history of the Universe has brought you to this instant in time. We only exist in the present. And the entire future will proceed from the present just as it is.
Living in the present is enough. Embrace it, you dont know what the future will be.

T. J. Cooke-DaviesBewertet in Großbritannien am 29. September 20234,0 von 5 Sternen A good book that could be great with more careful editing.
As someone with a long-standing interest in both science and spirituality, I found the author’s primary argument to be utterly convincing. What I found irritating, however, was the frequent repetition of key points, coupled with the feeling of being “preached” to. A tougher editorial stance could have reduced both of these irritants.
Despite this criticism, this was one of the most thought-provoking books I have read for years, from someone who clearly knows what they are writing about.

RobBewertet in Australien am 2. Juni 20242,0 von 5 Sternen Less about our future and more about our past
I bought this book expecting somewhat of a renewed philosophical take on how humans should think about ourselves, and our place in the universe. This is indeed covered, towards the very end of the book in 20-30 pages or so and that part was a relatively interesting and inspiring read.
However, I had to wade through almost 200 pages first which was essentially historical accounts of physics, astronomy, biology, cosmology, etc I suppose all to set the stage for the “manifesto” bit at the end. But for someone who has read about these topics in other books many times over I found it extremely frustrating.
I don’t normally write critical reviews like this. But I can save you the effort of buying this book by summing up the key premise as “life on earth is very precious and perhaps extremely rare… we shouldn’t assume life is plentiful in the Universe… so, let’s not screw it up”.
Perhaps if you haven’t read other books like this you’ll enjoy it. But otherwise give it a miss, or at least be prepared to skip large sections of the book to get to the most relevant - and I do admit important - arguments.
