Dawn of Surrender put a big smile on my face! This novella shows us how the legendary Mackenzie family got its start in Surrender beginning with Cole and Elizabeth.
In the late 1800s, women were not allowed to do many things including owning land and managing their own finances. So when Elizabeth's father realized he was dying, he sought out a man he trusted to take care of his daughter and give her some of the same freedoms she enjoyed that were outside the norm for their time: Sheriff Cole Mackenzie. Of course the man may have been doing a little matchmaking too since he knew Lizzie was quite taken with the handsome lawman...
Unfortunately a quick marriage, 12 year age difference and lack of communication led to a strained first year together but Lizzie and Cole are hoping a few nights tucked away at the town's hotel might do a little to help improve the situation. A major snowstorm blows in bringing trouble right along with it, and Cole is about to fund out just how spirited his wife can be!
The US Marshals have been trying to recruit Cole for quite some time, but he has no intention if joining them. He would rather focus on his marriage and beautiful wife, but the latest emissary from the government brings some very unwelcome news as motivation. Danger descends on Surrender without warning, and Cole and Lizzie will have to fight side by side to secure their future.
Lizzie is an independent, intelligent woman who is ahead of her time and I loved her character. Cole proves himself to be a worthy partner and just as enamored of her as she is with him once they finally get around to communicating more clearly! There is action, suspense, heat and love aplenty despite the novella length and I found myself wishing for more as soon as I finished it. Whether you are a current fan if the Mackenzie series or you have just been thinking about checking it out, Dawn of Surrender is well worth the 1-click!
While I enjoyed the characters and how things happened, I missed the spark (ie romance) from other novels. I don't get why there wasn't more of it, there was certainly chance to include it.
Overall, I don't think it's that memorable considering all the novels and novellas included in the series, but it's cute to add to the library if you're invested in the series and the whole resolution was very nice.
