The smash New York Times bestselling author continues the chilling tale begun in Kiss of the Bees and Hour of the Hunter with this shocking new tale of knife-edge suspense

The Walker family survived the atrocities perpetrated by a serial killer and his crazed acolyte in both Hour of the Hunter and Kiss of the Bees. But can they escape the vengeance of a new enemy whose target is their precious daughter, Lani?

Told they’re traveling to a loving adoptive family in southern Arizona, young girls are being spirited away from an orphanage deep in Colonial Mexico. But the fate that awaits them is truly horrifying. And when death comes, it will be a blessing.

Former Sheriff Brandon Walker is a reluctant retiree. Golf just can’t replace the action and sense of purpose his job provided. When he’s invited to join The Last Chance Club to review and long-cold unsolved cases, he has no idea that the first case to cross his path will be one he may have botched as a young sheriff. And when the case from all those decades past becomes entangled with a current murder, it seems a serial killer with a very long and shocking track record may be back in business . . .

J.A. Jance is the New York Times best selling author of 46 contemporary mysteries in four different series.

A voracious reader, J. A. Jance knew she wanted to be a writer from the moment she read her first Wizard of Oz book in second grade. Always drawn to mysteries, from Nancy Drew right through John D. McDonald's Travis Magee series, it was only natural that when she tried her hand at writing her first book, it would be a mystery as well.

J. A. Jance went on to become the New York Times bestselling author of the J. P. Beaumont series, the Joanna Brady series, three interrelated thrillers featuring the Walker family, and Edge of Evil. Born in South Dakota and brought up in Bisbee, Arizona, Jance lives with her husband in Seattle, Washington, and Tucson, Arizona.

Jance is an avid crusader for many causes, including the American Cancer Society, Gilda's Club, the Humane Society, the YMCA, and the Girl Scouts. A lover of animals, she has a rescued Dachshund named Bella.

I have trouble believing that her first book was as bad as she says! Every fiction book she has written has been excellent. I've read every one them, some of them 2 or 3 times. This is one of the best. I lived in Tucson for 20 years and she really captures the feel of that wonderful city. A serial killer and her pyscotic enabling husband have gotten away with for over 30 years. But they never counted on Brandon Walker and his family and friends. When Brandon starts looking into a murder that's over 30 years old, it doesn't take long for him to suspect that they are still at it! He's no longer the sheriff of Pima County but he is still a cop at heart. Will this case finally kill him? Will he be able to bring down the bad guys? Laine is finishing up her pre-med courses but a death brings her home early. Who dies? Read this fascinating book to find out! Highly recommended.

I've been reading JA Jance books for years. I'd skipped this series but when I saw its book 5 intersected with the Beaumont series I felt I needed to read the first four. This is book three.

At the end of the book, the author explains the difference between mysteries and thrillers. In mysteries you learn the villain in the end. In thrillers you learn the villain in the beginning and gradually see what evil he does. This series is made up of thrillers. I'd prefer mysteries and had to push myself through this one as I had trouble dealing with the tension. The summary had lead me to be concerned that one of the Walker Family children was going to get enmeshed in the terror and I knew I didn't want to read about a fully developed character and in particular a child being victimized. Spoiler alert, this did not happen.

Putting the tension aside, this series does a wonderful job of weaving in the mythology and culture of the reservation. I really like that aspect of this series. The writing is excellent. This is good work. Perhaps Jance's best. It's just not my preferred genre. Still I'll push on so I can complete her other series.

J.A Jance has become one of my favorite, preferred authors. The Ali Reynolds series is quickly becoming my favorite series of the four she has written: J.P. Beaumont (Seattle, WA Policeman Detective) was her first series, Joanne Brady (Cochise Country, AZ Sheriff; my favorite and my introduction to the southwest when I moved to Cochise County, AZ 3 years ago), and the Walker Family (Pima County (Tucson), AZ Sheriff) is her fourth series are all excellent. Having said that, it would be very difficult for me to decide which of the four series is my favorite. I supposed the favorite would have to be whichever series Jances' latest book is from. Can't wait to read more!

My only other favorite, preferred authors is Kathy Reichs, author of the "Temperance Brennan" or "Bones" series, which I would assume most TV watchers and medical/forensic mystery readers know of. She writes several series as well: Virals (teenage mysteries)' Exposure, Code and Seizure.

As both a retired U.S. Army NCO and forensic psychologist, I find these series extremely engrossing and highly enjoyable. I would recommend them to anyone who has an interest in mystery stories. The Reich series for medical/forensic/police mysteries and J.A. Jance for non-standard Sheriff/police mysteries. They are truly worth your time and energy. And, on Kindle especially, the price is inconsequential.

I though this story was more catching then the other walker series books. I enjoy the mystery but learn more of the tradition of the way of the native Americans. The medicine man has always intrigued me as a child so this kept me interested.

It took awhile to get characters straight, but when all were in line and remembering characters from past books, I was thoroughly hooked. If reading a book in two days means something, then this book has it.

As a reader, it's easy to see yourself immersed in the character's lives. Feeling happy, sad, scared or mad in a series of chapters makes you want to continue reading until the end.

Great job J.A. Jance. I'm looking forward to the next book.

This Walker trilogy is my favorite among Jance's books. She is a master at developing her plot and her characters. I especially enjoyed the Native American stories at the beginning of each chapter, and the Native American people and traditions throughout these books. That being said, I think that the ending was too abrupt. There were many things unsaid. It was like she'd decided that she'd written enough, so she ended it. I've noticed this in other books she's written, but in this book, it seemed particularly egregious.
