Day of Infamy, 60th Anniversary: The Classic Account of the Bombing of Pearl Harbor Paperback – Illustrated, May 1, 2001
Purchase options and add-ons
A special 60th anniversary edition of the bestselling re-creation of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, by the author of A Night to Remember.
Sunday, December 7, 1941, was, as President Roosevelt said, "a date which will live in infamy." Day of Infamy is a fascinating account of that unforgettable day's events. In brilliant detail Walter Lord traces the human drama of the great attack: the spies behind it; the Japanese pilots; the crews on the stricken warships; the men at the airfields and the bases; the Japanese pilot who captured an island single-handedly when he could not get back to his carrier; the generals, the sailors, the housewives, and the children who responded to the attack with anger, numbness, and magnificent courage.
In piecing together the saga of Pearl Harbor, Lord traveled over fourteen thousand miles and spoke or corresponded with over five hundred individuals who were there. He obtained exclusive interviews with members of the Japanese attacking force and spent hundreds of hours with the Americans who received the blow -- not just the admirals and generals, but enlisted men and families as well. He visited each of the Hawaiian bases attacked and pored over maps, charts, letters, diaries, official files, newspapers, and some twenty-five thousand pages of testimony, discovering a wealth of information that had never before been revealed. Day of Infamy is an inspiring human document and the best account we have of one of the epic events in American history.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2017The sad truth is our children are very unlikely to learn much of anything about the causes and the struggles of WW2 from their history classes in school beyond the most cursory watered down stories. That's a shame because the effects of the events described in this book continue to define our world. Books like Walter Lord's Day of Infamy go a long way towards filling the gaps. Easy to read and fascinating from cover to cover, the book details eyewitness accounts from the Japanese, Hawaiian and American perspectives of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor that propelled the United States into WW2. It features a blow by blow account of the events leading up to the attack, detailed accounts of the many human struggles for survival during the battle and the frightening aftermath as jittery defenders shot down their own planes and prepared for an invasion that never came. The book includes maps, diagrams and pictures taken during and directly after the battle.
This book will go far beyond facts figures and statistics, although there are plenty of them to go around. Lord brings the personalities of the participants through to tell the stories. From the frustrated Boatswain's Mate on the Monaghan who threw wrenches at low flying planes while awaiting ammunition to the frightened B17 pilots desperately trying to land their planes in the middle of the battle before they were accidentally shot down to the gunner on the Pennsylvania who fired his 5 inch gun until the barrel became softened from the heat, the incredible stories just keep coming. Lord covers the relatively little know attempt by Japan to use small 1-2 man submarines to attack the ships in the harbor and the suffering of the civilians whose homes were bombed and straffed and who quietly threw back the "invasion" of a downed Japanese pilot who attempted to hold villagers hostage while seeking a way to escape capture. I strongly encourage people to read this book and learn why the people who lived these events were called The Greatest Generation.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2022Have had this book for years and finally got around to reading it. Similarly to Mr. Lord's book "A Night to Remember", this book was engrossing, informative, and way too short. Ful! Of facts and many eyewitness accounts the book ends too abruptly. Still it is worth the time for those who want a concise, factual account as told by the hundreds of participants.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2023This is one of the best books on Pearl Harbor. Instead of getting the reader bogged down by mundane details, Walter Lord gives the reader a narrative of what individuals at Pearl Harbor actually experienced. This gives the reader the feeling of being a witness to the attack on Pearl Harbor. The book is a great legacy for those who served and paid the ultimate price so we can enjoy the freedoms we have today. The book is a reminder for Americans to “Remember Pearl Harbor”.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2012Walter Lord's "Day of Infamy" is labeled as the "classic account of the bombing of Pearl Harbor" and the label is well-deserved. I read this back in the early 1970's as a young teenager and remember enjoying it then, and have now reread it and once again found the book quite an easy-reading, insightful work. Today we have many accounts of the attack from the American perspective, but this was perhaps one of the earliest works to include a view of the Japanese perspective as well. I think this gives the book a more well-rounded and "even handed" feel. Many books have been written about the Pearl Harbor attack since the publication of this one - Gordon Prange's "At Dawn We Slept" comes to mind - and they may go into much more detail about personalities, strategies, command structure, damage reports, and aftermath repercussions. Yet my guess is that most, if not all, of those writers have read and/or use Lord's book as a starting point for their own research. Again, "Day of Infamy" is an easy reading book which provides a mixture of facts and data intermixed with personal reflections from those who were there. For those who haven't read about the Pearl Harbor attack, this "classic account" is a great starting point.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2024My husband will enjoy reading this.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2013There are countless books on the Pearl Harbor attack. This book stands out because it gives many first person stories of the people who were there, not just the military personnel but the civilians as well. It also shows just how messed up communications were shortly after the attack, something not always covered in history books. For as many books as I read on this story I always learn something new. This book offers many insights I have not come across before. Should be in your history book collection.

Having recently returned to the UK from Hawaii and a visit to Pearl Harbor I was interested in reading more about the 7 December 1941. Having read Walter Lords book on the Battle of Midway which was excellent I thought he might be my first choice, I wasn't disappointed. The majority of the book is based on the experiences of people involved during the raid, what they were doing and how they reacted, this makes the read all the more interesting. I highly recommend this book, although it is a little expensive.

This is a definitive account of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor from both sides of the conflict. A good read.
