Incredibly Funny Even For Adults

I read this book when it was first published over 20 years ago. To be precise, I started reading it in a bookstore and made an absolute idiot of myself because I was laughing so hard. This book is a flashback of a school trip to a farm where one of the children brings along his pet boa constrictor. The child's language is straightforward, as though everything being said is perfectly normal, but the wonderful illustrations tell a different story: my particular favorite is when the children visit the hen house, and the boa is looking rapturously at the chickens who are fluttering away at flank speed. I actually came across a newspaper column some years later in which adults mentioned their favorite books, and one adult also chose "The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash"!

I am getting this for my nephew for his 4th birthday, and I fully expect he will be just as enthralled as I was! Highly recommended.

I love this book. Had it as a kid and passed it on to my son, and then it got ruined by a leaking fish tank. But it's such a great book with such detailed and fun illustrations I had to buy it myself. It came wrapped so well so there would not be any damage. Exactly as advertised and well worth it. He loves the pictures and laughs at them with the story. He's 10 and still enjoys it and in my 30s, so do I!

Simple Story, Visual Feast

This book, and it's storyline, may be a little young for my almost nine year old daughter, but upon reading it to her (a bedtime ritual), she was quite engaged with the detail of the pictures. On that front, the book is terrifically detailed, providing an abundance of visual information that (probably purposefully) contrasts nicely with the short, unexcited answers the narrative character (a daughter returning from a field trip) doles out in response to her mom's eager questions (a dynamic I can relate to). Once we were done reading, my daughter studied the pages to make sure there weren't any undiscovered evidence of funny goings-on at the farm. I'm sure she'll be intrigued enough to peruse it again.
