I've preached as a layman ,at times, through the many years that I've walked with The Lord.I think the first passage I preached on was Psalm 14:1'The fool has said in his heart there is no God.' Edwards thoughts on this verse are scintillating-May 5th "There is a spirit of atheism prevailing in the hearts of men;a strange disposition to doubt of the very being of God,and of another world, and of everything which cannot be seen with the bodily eyes." This kind of thinking in practice denies the existence of 'The Soul Of Man'.The unseen part of his being. This mindset seems to be quite common in our generation.
The priority we give to things reveal how important they are to us.Edward's urges this to be 'THE' priority-May 10th "Be directed to sacrifice everything to your soul's eternal interest. This be so much your bent, and what you are resolved in,that you will make everything give place to it.Let nothing stand before your resolution of seeking The Kingdom Of God." A couple of verses that immediately come to mind which support Edward's comments here are-Matthew 6:33 'But,seek ye first the Kingdom Of God,and his righteousness;and all these things shall be added unto you.',and Mark 8:36'For what shall it profit a man,if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul."
Jonathan Edward's comments on 'How we should view our time in this world' are 'Biblically Airtight'-March 20th "If we spend our lives in pursuit of a temporal happiness,as riches or sensual pleasures, credit and esteem from men... all these things will be of little significance to us.Death will blow up all our hopes and put an end to these enjoyments."
On godly practice Mr.Edwards has great light-June 25th "He who sincerely prefers God to all other things in his heart will do it in his practice.for when God and all our other things come to stand in competition, that is the proper trial what a man chooses...".His comments here can serve as a guide to measure the degree of one's sincerity.
Jonathan Edward's 'Day By Day' can be an excellent help in beginning one's day,and help set your thoughts heavenward. His thoughts are sobering, challenging, spiritual minded, abounding in wisdom and very edifying.I've read quite a bit of Edward's writings and Randall Pederson's choices from Edward's considerable catalog are superb.
Many entries say a bunch of nothing. It's as if the publisher closed their eyes, ran their mouse cursor over a sermon, copied a section, opened their eyes, then pasted it on the blank sheet for a days entry.
You'd be better off to just go buy a book of Edward's sermons and read a paragraph or two of it a day.
Try buying Charity and It's Fruits or His book on knowing Christ.
This devotional, is just a bunch of meaningless, unthought out excerpts.
