Editorial Reviews

Destruction are backback on Nuclear Blast and back with a vengeance! the south German legends have been synonymous with high energy thrash for almost 30 years now, never veering from their pure ethos, never backing down. Now, returning to their true home at Nuclear Blast, iconic metal frontman Schmier and the boys are back with another thrash metal gem. DAY OF RECKONING shows the bands most fierce, brutal and energetic side.

I'll admit that on first listen, this new Destruction sounded like most of their post-reunion material. And, to be honest, it IS like that. But this one has a darkness and depth that is hard to pick out until after about 6 listens, and then even harder to describe. For those of you unfamiliar with Destruction, this is mostly fast Thrash, with some spots being more mid-paced while others get super-fast. But mostly just fast. "Day of Reckoning" doesn't (in my opinion) have any songs that are INSTANTLY classic, though a few are instantly memorable. Having embedded every Schmier-fronted Destruction album in my brain, I found this one to flow more successfully, with very few (in fact, NO!)groan-inducing clumsy segues or ill-fitting riffs that bring down an otherwise excellent song, the sort of thing that flawed previous albums. However, the inherent brilliance of this album is strangely hidden, in a way I can't really pin down. The drums and bass and vocals are all very up-front, and the guitars for the most part. Nothing is inaudible in the mix. But many of the complex (but not "prog"-wankery complex)guitar riffs aren't easy to pick out. At first you are impressed with the loud, vicious machinegun attack of the music, but are left feeling "well, more of the same...", but it is not. There ARE indeed riffs comparable to classic-era Destruction here, but somehow they are obscured...I listened closely and they more and more became prominent. Again, I found that Mike has come up with some quite ancient-sounding riffs, which lurk like spectres of the past behind the rhythmic blitzkrieg of the songs' violent drive. VERY difficult to describe!Read more ›

Haven't paid attention to Destruction in a long time. Shame on me. I picked up this album because I heard The Price on a complication album. The song blew me away as did the album when I bought it. Great album from front to back, the Dio cover is worth the price of admission. Much love for Destruction, keep doing what you do!!

New Destruction is another Killer release from Germanys best Metal. Every song is Thrash Metal at its finest, Sounds like it came from the Destructions finest 80's days not like it's better or anything like that better I think its all good but Ya, Crushing release man. Pick it up along with all Destructions albums.
Along side with the latest Thrash releases from bands like Exodus, Artillery, Sodom, Sacrifice.
Can't wait for the the North American tour.

Oh Ya, the DIO cover (Stand up and Shout) is awesome and a good appreciation.

I love everything these guys have ever done, this album is no exception. What really re-peaked my interest in Destruction was the previous album DEVOLUTION. I like it better myself. That being said, this is a great album and worth picking up if you are or ever were a fan of the band. To me this sounds a little more straightforward then the last one, not a bad thing... just my impression. I think Mike is the most underrated guitar player in metal. Most thrash guitar riffing is almost interchangeable but to me no one sounds like Mike. The guy should be on the cover of guitar magazines. Thrash fan or not, any guitar player could appreciate his amazing playing. My only negative was I thought that the vocal melodies/delivery start to become the same, kind of predictable. I know I know..there really isn't a vocal "melody".. this is Destruction. I just found myself wishing Schmier would mix it up a little in his vocal approach in the choruses. But even still, Destruction are legends in my opinion, as good or better than any band in thrash today. This album put a smile on my face from the first chord, killer guitars, brutal pissed off vocals and jack hammer drumming. I have never understood why some of the popular american bands.... Anthrax, Megadeth, Testament, Overkill, Exodus..etc.. don't take these guys on tour. Probably because Destruction would wipe the stage with them!! Highly underrated band and another great album.

This album rips. I liked it upon first listen, and then liked it more and more after subesequent spins and now after seeing them live I love it. 'Devils Advocate' will have you screaming *sold your soul to the devil, the DEVIL* while banging your head.
Best thrash album I have heard thus far this year.
