Review

Starred Review, Booklist, July 1, 2011:
"Approaching a subject that many prefer to avoid, Yolen writes with precision and tenderness...A quiet tribute to the passage from life into death and, potentially, a comfort to children facing the death of a pet."

About the Author

JANE YOLEN has written 300 books for children, including Owl Moon, winner of the 1988 Caldecott Medal; the bestselling How Do Dinosaurs . . . ? series; and our own Hush, Little Horsie. Her work has been recognized with two Christopher Medals, the Golden Kite Award, the Jewish Book Award, and many others for her distinctive middle and YA fantasy fiction. When she is not writing—is she ever not writing?—Jane composes songs, performs as a professional storyteller, and enjoys being a grandma.

JIM LAMARCHE has illustrated over 20 children's books, some of which he has also written. His work has been awarded the Parents magazine Best Book of the Year; the Irma S. and James H. Black Award for Excellence in Picture Books; and the ABA Pick of the List. He lives in central California with his wife and children.

Losing a beloved pet is hard, and this book provides a bridge to healing for the entire family. What really sets this book apart, and that I hugely appreciate, are:
1. it is non-religious,
2. does not include the adoption of a new kitty,
3. extremely well written,
4. the artwork isn't too cartoonish.

My two-year-old daughter loves it. I love it. My husband loves it. We've both shed tears reading it to our girl; heart touching and sweet, this book has really helped us through the grieving process.
~Rest in peace, dear Cleo. We'll love you always~

Very moving and beautiful perception of death. Anyone who loves eventually loses and it's never an easy experience. This story of a cat's final day teaches us all to enjoy every moment and find the beauty in the everyday. Also good for children to help learn about death as a natural event and not something to be feared. Saying goodbye isn't forever.

The book touch me a lot and I LOVE it because it touch me so so so so so much

(I just got an email about this review going live. It was written by my 8 year old daughter without my knowledge using our Kindle Fire HD that she reads books on. I will leave it here but wanted to disclose this.)

I cat passed away. My grandsons loved the cat and looked forward to coming to see him or he going to visit them. The book was a wonderful way to tell them that the cat would not be visiting or be at my house anymore when they came to visit.

This is so beautifully written. I cried (and cried), as I finished the last couple pages. This is a book you will want to read with your child - and you will cry too. When I was younger and saw my mom cry about sad experiences, it modeled to me the importance of letting the grief out. So don't be afraid to grieve in front of your children as you read together. This story will most certainly trigger the sadness you both will be feeling after the loss of a pet. But it will also help trigger the healing.

I found this little book while working in the library, and new it was one I wanted in my own collection. The soft illustrations and tender words speak to anyone who has lost a pet. Our own 18 year-old cat, also named Rose was nearing her own goodbye, and this book was a timely and tender mercy for our family.

I'm a therapist and this is a really good little book for helping children talk about death, not only of pets, but also of family members. Little people need a way to talk about this issue and this helps.

My kitty passed away several months ago at a ripe old age, it's the first time kids and I experienced the death of a pet, her life slipped away in our gentle petting. The pain and the sense of loss was beyond words. We gave ourselves time to grieve and have no plan to get another cat. there hasn't been a single day gone by that I don't think of kitty. The garden where she was buried is a place she loved hunt for little snakes and voles and birds. I saw this book randomly at a store today, scanned the last page, and I was in tears right away. I bought this book and read to kids, they loved it. This book is beautifully written, and gave us another way to heal. Highly recommend it to everybody, especially children who miss their kitties.
