From the Back Cover

Need a day away to relax, refresh, renew? Just get in your car and go! This first edition of Day Trips from Chicago is your guide to hundreds of exciting things to do, see, and discover in your own backyard. With full trip-planning information and tips on where to eat, shop, and stop along the way, you can make the most of your time off and rediscover the simple pleasures of a day trip. Explore places you never knew existed, many free of charge, and most within a two-hour drive of the Chicago metro area.

Do something delicious: Taste a kringle (Racine’s signature pastry), a cheese curd (in Wisconsin—where else?), or a Cozy Dog (no corny matter in Springfield).

Do something cultural: Go museum-hopping in Champaign-Urbana, Bloomington-Normal, Madison, South Bend, and Peoria.

Do something positively political: Explore two state capitals—Madison, with its elegant capitol building; and Springfield, where Abraham Lincoln’s legend comes to life.

Bravo to Ms Drake! This book is long overdue. DAY TRIPS is very well organized, and the maps that accompany each section make all the places mentioned easy to travel to. I've lived in the Chicago area for almost 40 years and my family and I have already explored and loved two areas that we'd never been to before! Who knew that Joliet and Rockford could be so interesting! It's definitely our new favorite "staycation" book, to be used for either day trips or overnight trips. The info on restaurants, hotels, sights to see and local tidbits (she even warns against speed traps in some areas) make it a handy and easy guide to places near Chicago. Thank you Ms Drake.

My husband and I together with our 8 year old son recently moved to the Chicago area. So, we decided that the best way to familiarize ourselves was to take day trips each weekend. Our objective was to see what our new surroundings had to offer without boring our son. We found Ms. Drake's "Day Trips From Chicago" on Amazon and it is a goldmine of valuable and entertaining information. We have used it every weekend and found some great trips which captured our son's interest as well as our own.

As a lifelong Chicagoan, one who takes regular, quirky weekend getaways with my family, I found so much to love in this book: surprising places to stay, locals-populated restaurants and museums and destinations I had no idea existed. All of this bodes well for Ms. Drake's compact, portable and information-packed guide. But beyond that, it stands out for being a fun, witty read---full of anecdotes, interesting, historic tidbits and sneak peeks into just why small towns fringing Chicago are are so worth one's time.
