However, my favorite part of the expansion is the rules for the new units. In particular, Snipers and the Finnish Ski troops are tremendously fun to play. Both can really cause havoc for your opponent and are a really good example of how to expand a simple game and keep it fun.
Great job Days of Wonder!
To be honest, I was not all that happy when I first opened it. The price, I payed $30, being so close to the original game I think I was expecting a bit more in the box. I knew the board was not included but I think I expected new playing cards, perhaps another set of Germans. Essentially all you get for your $ is new scenarios, some new additions/mix ups to the rules, new terrains which are mostly visual but some have different effects and the (as others have mentioned very cool) Russian infrantry/tanks/artillary. So for like 10 bucks less than the original I get half the game which after I thought about it kind of bugged me. After playing it though, as others mentioned, the new rules are very cool and the scenarios are fresh and don't feel rehashed so you keep learning more history and stretching your strategy to new situations.
I bought the separate board because... it's just cool, but if I was to have a critique it's that this expansion should include the snow board for the price... or be 5-10$ less. Perhaps my expectations are off but going based on the price of the original I think it's a fair complaint.
The Eastern Front expansion builds on the basic system with some theater appropriate special rules and units. The scenarios seem well designed and playtested. Compared to some of the lackluster and unbalanced scenarios in the Mediterranean expansion set (which I do not see around much) this module is preferred.
Of course, there is still the PacificTheater...and the Command and Colors Napoleonic and Ancients games...and...and...Did I mention "Samurai Battles"?
As add ons go this one is very good. It plays differently than the original and isn't just a couple of new scenarios. As always with Days of Wonder production quality is high and pleasing to the eye. The game is fun if a little to random to merit the 5th Star but if you enjoyed the original then I recommend this add on.
This expansion will add hours of fun to your gaming and open up a whole new front or wargaming possiblities. The Commissar rules add a fun twist to the card play system for the Russian player and the use of minefields provides some interesting twists. I highly recommend this addition to a great game system.

My son loves this game. He received the original game for Christmas and studied the booklet for the Expansion pieces he wanted.Published 17 months ago by corinne blevins
I have a new appreciation for that theater. The Russians won by attrition. The rule set, is tweaked just enough to make that apparent without being heavy-handed.Published 24 months ago by Value Conscious

a quality upgrade to a solid game, well worth it! Components are nice, historically interesting. Little or no flash on the pieces.Published on February 18, 2014 by Billy McDonough
This adds the Russian element to Memoir 44, which is only proper since the War was actually won in Russia rather than in the West as we Americans like to think (though we did add... Read morePublished on August 23, 2013 by Maximilian K. Biltz
