Underworld is a good sequel to the original...with many similarities and a few new twists. The game quality is the same as before, as is the creativity, and playability.
I wish that they had taken the Monsters additional further then they did. At least having some kind of roll for each monster to determine how many pieces it would count. They made the tokens each unique...but they all do the same thing. Also...I think that the Popular Places should start on the map...and that killing the monster should drop only the relic.
These are all additions you can make on your own...but would have been nice to have in the rules.
Still...great game and addition to Small World. We have the tunnels on order and look forward to playing with both sets!!
Setting up the game takes maybe 5-10 minutes:
- lay out the appropriate board (different boards for 2, 3, 4, 5 players)
- Place mountains and monsters (as directed on the board)
- shuffle and lay out starting creatures
- shuffle and pick stack of special places/relics
- pass out starting coins (VP) to each player
The game takes about an hour for 4 people. Your first game will probably take a little longer as you get used to the rules and mechanics of the game.
Gameplay is straight-forward, expanding on the concept of games like Risk where conquering and holding territories gives you resources/points. I played with my wife and 9-year-old daughter, who were able to pick up the rules and have fun in one session.
Players choose a creature/special trait combo from the available choices and get varying numbers of tokens to use in conquering regions of the board. Different combinations will give you bonuses, like more VP earned for different region types, fewer units required to conquer regions, etc. All the details for the creatures and special traits are on 2-sided sheets that each player has in front of them.
Conquer territories for a few turns until you're spread thin and put your race into decline. You still get VP for their regions, and next turn you get to pick another race to invade the board with.
With all the different creature combinations and special places/relics possible, this game has very good replayability. Expansions and connectors are available that allow you to connect this game with the base game (Small World Tunnels), and add other races or game mechanics to all of them.
