About the Author

EARL STEINBICKER is a born tourist who believes that travel should be a joy, not an endurance test. For over 35 years he has been refining his carefree style of daytripping while working in New York, London, Paris, and other cities; first as head of a firm specializing in promotional photography and later as a professional writer. Whether by public transportation or private car, he has thoroughly probed the most delightful aspects of countries around the world — while always returning to the comforts of city life at night. A strong desire to share these experiences has led him to develop the “Daytrips” series of guides, which he continues to expand and revise. Recently, he has been assisting other authors in developing additional “Daytrips” books, further expanding the series.

Take my word for it, trust Earl. Having lived in Europe off and on for 10 years and annual visits since 1992, I know France fairly well. Earl will take you to places you actually want to experience, little out of the way delights, beautiful views, or slightly off the beaten path cultural stops - rather than checking off yet another world famous location you'll find on some tourist office's list. He'll fill you in on how to avoid crowds, scams, and overpriced trinkets. After using Michelin guides for years, I found Earl's advice and voice more in line with what I wanted to see as a tourist. I have four of Earl's books in this series and use(d) them diligently the last 15 years. I'm not into spending time at obvious tourist traps, but enjoy taking a nice walk through a part of town that's full of charming sites I'd never see at home. Along the way, with the help of these books, I have a nice lunch, a drink later in the day, and a lovely dinner. A perfect day. Build your own perfect memories and buy these books.

Earl Steinbickler lists 48 trips in this edition of "Daytrips France", and thanks to him, we've been able to take 35 of them during our previous visits for France. Whether we stayed in Paris, Avignon, or Nice, Mr. Steinbickler's ideas for venturing both inside and outside of town created non-stressful touring, especially for people like us who prefer taking trains or buses to renting cars. For traveling in a group, this book makes making destination decisions for the day a breeze.

I've used Daytrips In France since I started going back to France in 1998, after an absence of several years. The idea of "daytripping" is appealing. You don't need to pack and get a hotel in another city every few days. He lists all the worthwhile sights, a map, a list of restaurants, etc. My only objection, and the only reason I gave it four, rather than 5, stars, is that they should be updated a bit more frequently - as the "practical' information can change. Restaurants close or increase prices (or new ones start!). Also, things can change in the "How To Get There" category. For example, the TGV now goes to Reims and there's a TGV station a bit outside the city now. Some trains still stop at Reims gare, but when buying your ticket, be sure you know whether you'll be arriving at (and leaving from) the station in the town center or the TGV station a few kilometres outside of town. (There are buses and trains between the two stations, by the way).
