It has the steamer/frother and an attached plastic tamper. The dials are very easy to use, just turn them at the right time.*
The water reservoir is super easy to see/detach and refill.
My regular 10 Oz mug can fit under this nozzle as well as 2 demitasse cups as pictured by the seller.
*Timing is important. I did have to go to YouTube to learn how to best use the De'Longhi Bar32 Retro 15 Bar Pump Espresso and Cappuccino maker. Even though I had read the explanations in the instruction manual and other reviewers tips, YouTube helped me see what to do. Once I learned the tips and explanations, I have zero regrets with my purchase.
I have had this since 2010 without any issues. It has always worked as it should- if I had an issue it was because I did not know what I was doing the first few times around the machine. lol
I have tried other espresso coffee brands but I have found my happy zone with using Cafe Bustelo. My shots come out strong and satisfyingly tasty.
I recommend this because it is good all around and it is an awesome quality and value for an espresso machine.
I've been using this espresso machine for over 6 months now making 4 shots of espresso every morning. It works like a champ and makes delicious espresso.
It is very simple to clean, easy to use and I can see it working for years to come.
All said from my first review stands. I have now owned this machine for a year and a half and it is still running strong! It's super easy to take apart and clean which I've only done twice. Not because it functionally was degrading but just for periodic maintainance. The citric acid de-scaling directions provided by Delonghi work great and it's much cheaper than commercial de-scalers.
My only complaints have to do not with the quality of the machine but the capability. From when I first turn on the machine to when I'm drinking my espresso takes 15 minutes. This includes the warmup time, cleanup time, and all brewing steps for 4 shots of espresso with about a cup of steamed milk.
When I'm looking to upgrade I'll be looking for both a double boiler and ones with higher capacity. The double boiler will allow me to pull my shots and steam my milk simultaneously which decreases the time I'm at the counter. And the higher capacity will ensure that there is plenty of hot water or steam. Currently, the machines "OK" (ready to brew or steam) light will oscillate between on and off which causes a less than optimal shot to be pulled or causes hot water to enter the milk instead of purely steam. All of these are nit-picky qualms but for truly consistent shots, are important.
Hope this helps and I do highly recommend this machine for those just starting espresso. It will help you to learn the ins and outs of how to pull a good shot while still maintaining a good price point.
The other recommendation I have for good espresso is get a good conical burr grinder.
Then I ordered this one and I'm loving it. Takes up only a small spot on the counter. Makes fantastic crema. Steams milk with a nice froth & despite ordering you to only use skim milk, it does steam coconut, almond, and full fat goat milks fine. The trick is to barely insert the steaming head into the very top of the milk & steam from there. If you insert deeply, it'll heat fast but not froth.
I wish it did have a slightly larger holder for grounds so I could pull a bigger, rich shot. But, overall, it's a great product.
I've owned one for 4 years until it stopped working properly. (The load on this machine was pretty heavy: 3 people drinking lattes almost daily. Plus, friends) The espresso from BAR32 comes close to Starbucks quality, but the price tag tells you that it's obviously not identical... It's close though! :) Milk-frother is decent. It's easy to get a grip on milk-foaming for beginners. It's plastic though, and difficult to clean.
A few downsides to this machine:
- Single boiler, which means that it takes much longer to make a drink that requires both espresso and frothed milk
- Mostly plastic. (Nothing broke on my machine, but it would certainly have a nicer look and sturdy feel if it was stainless steel.)
- Little space. So, you can't put a large cup where the espresso comes out. You'd have to get a small cup that fits there.
- Again, the plastic frother attachment! Difficult to clean.
I bought my second BAR32 and I'm loving it.
