Unfortunately, two days ago, the plastic surrounding the hot plate began to melt. The vendor from whom I purchased it has already refunded my money and has asked me to return it. I will NOT purchase another one for fear of fire hazard. This coffeemaker would have received 10 stars from me had it not begun to melt itself to death. For this reason, I'm heartsick.....it WAS the perfect coffeemaker.
Every morning I awaken, pour in fresh, filtered water and coffee grinds. I push the power button and the Aroma button then walk away to let the machine do it's thing. Aroma brews take considerably longer, as it pours some hot water on the grinds and just lets it simmer for a few seconds before being released into the awaiting pot below. This squeezes out all the flavor and delicacy of your coffee blend for the absolute best flavor possible. It handles the delicate flavorings of Amaretto Nut coffee and other flavored treats.
I've been spoiled beyond repair by the amazingness of this machine. I could only wish that more friends and family would have one so that visits would be more pleasant.
It's been well over 3 years since buying this and it still operates without hesitation and without failure of any kind. I love this machine.
Quickly enough I learned the coffee maker would cost me three times my purchase price to ship it back. And I learned about some hefty expectations from SCG for my return to qualify for full refund.
Reluctantly, I set up the coffee maker to take my chances and run my own testing on brew time, ease of use, the pause 'n pour feature, coffee flavor, etc. I've been using this 14 cup maker for four, almost five months.
It brews the BEST tasting coffee. The counter space foot print is small and convenient as is the accessible side pour feature to fill the tank. It brews HOT coffee and the warming plate keeps the coffee hot without scorching. My model includes a timer indicator which beeps in 15 minute increments to remind me how long the coffee has been exposed to the warming plate. I like that option so I can transfer the coffee to a thermal carafe or thermos if I choose for optimum freshness.
Now to comment on the pause and pour feature. I encourage buyers in the way: one needs to be mindful of the brew basket design. One morning I pulled the carafe out to pour a cup while in brew-mode. The spring coil fell out onto the warming plate and as you're predicting along with me, coffee continued to brew. Albeit there was a mess to clean up. No big deal. It didn't require a graduate degree to decide to re-position the carafe until all the completion of the brew cycle.. After pouring the pot of coffee into a thermos, I collected the spring and the mushroom-shaped plastic piece (that hangs on exterior bottom of brew basket). There's also an ALL IMPORTANT tiny gasket INSIDE the brew basket.Any brew basket requires a gasket in order for the pause & serve feature to operate. I had dis-lodged that tiny gasket disc while cleaning the brew basket (I use a brush); the loosened gasket had adhered onto the coffee filter bottom. It accompanied the grounds all the way to my trash recepticle...when I had disposed of the coffee grounds.
Now that I know this, I exercise more caution and less rigorous scrubbing when washing the brew basket AND I know to inspect to make sure the brush hasn't lifted the gasket off the stem portion of the spring and mushroom-shaped stopper. I suppose anyone could argue until one took their last breath about the feasibility design or design "failure" of the brew basket pause and pour mechanism.
I'm not here to debate or argue. My intent is explain what to look for if the brew basket doesn't pause and you find coffee in continuous brew mode. I will say the error is more on me, "Operator Error" for over-scrubbing. Now that I understand the design, I have not had any repeat issues. One other disclaimer is that I am NOT mechanically inclined at all yet I figured out the gasket stretches over the top, stem part INSIDE brew basket; the spring placement wasn't difficult to figure out either.
DELICIOUS, balanced coffee consistently brewed at the correct brewing temperature; coffee brews quickly...stays warm with 15 minute beep reminders for freshness. This is what you can expect from this coffee maker. Follow the instructions for amount of coffee to use and measure your coffee grounds with the included scoop. We found we like one level scoop of coffee per cup and then we add one scoop "for the pot."
After some internet researching, I understand they started using steel screws instead of stainless steel so the screws rust out - allowing for leakage.
Disappointed because this problem occurred past warranty and I had already purchased a second unit (before this defect was realized) as a gift for my in-laws.
PS - Made good coffee when it worked.
Update: Contacted MGF and they will replace under warranty (1-year from mfg date).
