Italian passion for elegant design, a penchant for color, and technological innovation characterize the De’Longhi Icona collection. The Icona Pump Espresso Machine is inspired by vintage Italian design that blends intuitive controls with bold finishes and quality materials. The dual filter holder, combined with the Icona’s high-pressure pump extraction, create caramel-colored crema with every use. Professional-style features include a warming plate on top of the machine to keep cups warm before use, as well as De'Longhi’s patented milk frothing Cappuccino System that enables you to make rich, thick, long-lasting foam for your latte or cappuccino. The Icona Pump Espresso Machine evokes the Italian spirit of la dolce vita, enhancing the design of any modern kitchen with a touch of style. The Icona Collection, which also includes the Icona Electric Kettle and the Icona 2 Slice Toaster, is inspired by the bold, striking lines of 1950s Italian design; a time when Italy was just beginning to dictate the rules of fashion and style to the world.
Convenient Frothing Wand for Rich, Long-Lasting Foam
Enjoy traditional cappuccino, enhanced by De’Longhi technology: rich, thick, long-lasting foam for you or your guests, made quickly and effortlessly.
15-Bar Pressure Pump System
As opposed to steam-powered extraction systems that push water through coffee grounds using only two to three bars of pressure, the Icona Pump Espresso Machine uses 15 bars of pressure. The high-pressure pump creates the foamy crema that gives espresso its rich flavor.
Multifunctional Filter Holder and Convenient Built-In Coffee Tamper
The filter holder is compatible with ground coffee as well as Easy Serving Espresso (ESE) pods. Offered by some of the world’s leading coffee roasters, including Illy and Starbucks, ESE pods are pre-portioned, so they take the guesswork out of preparation and are easier to clean up than ground coffee. Rails on the sides of the cup warming plate protect cups from accidentally falling off. The coffee tamper is built in, so you have one less piece of equipment cluttering your preparation space. Refill the 48-ounce water reservoir by lifting it out of the machine using its specially designed handle.
Intuitive Control Panel
This espresso pump's face includes three indicator buttons with corresponding lights to show whether the unit is on or off, the temperature of the coffee or hot water, and the pressure of the steam. The knob on top of the machine regulates the volume of steam released through the Cappuccino System steam wand.
Need to push the button to heat the water and then, when the light green is on, push the button to operate the pump in order to release water. If the button for the heating element to warm the water is not pushed will result in delivery of cold water.

The first unit I received was defective. I contacted DeLonghi to explain the problem (water only heats up to 70 degrees celsius), and they shipped me a new unit. To the wrong address because they typed it in wrong, but they got me one on the second try. I was highly impressed that they took my complaint seriously and didn't conclude I was doing something wrong. The rep clearly knew the product.
The second unit works perfectly. That is to say, it makes a passable espresso with a thick head of crema. It's not high end. But I didn't pay for high end. I paid for "good enough". The frother is perfect. The "cup warmer" feature is a gimmick and utterly useless. You would need to leave it on for twenty minutes or more to heat cups.
The instructions are poor and the buttons are labelled only with vague icons, so there is a bit of a learning curve. But it's not complicated once you get the hang of it. With only three buttons and a steam valve, it's easy to figure out. The noise level is not excessive for a pump espresso maker. Steam espresso makers are quieter, so keep that in mind if waking up your spouse is a concern.
I have three tips not mentioned in the instructions:
First: Get an espresso cup with a pouring spout if you need to make anything that requires transferring the espresso (iced coffee, for example). It must be exactly three inches or less in height--most coffee cups do not fit. If it's graduated, even better. A 5oz steel cream pitcher works well, and some 8oz pitchers will fit. Also get a larger one for frothing milk.
Second: When you have finished making espresso, turn off the machine and then release the remaining pressure by opening the steam valve. Obviously you should have a cup under the steam valve when you do this. Many of the complaints on this unit seem to involve a short lifespan, and I suspect that leaving the unit under high pressure for extended periods is a leading cause of early failure. I always opened my Krups machine after using it, which is probably why I got ten years out of it.
Third: The coffee pods come apart completely for thorough cleaning. Unscrew the plastic base, pop the filter out of the pod, and you can even pull the filter out of the rubber gasket (probably not necessary).
Pros: Good shots with crema
Great value. I've pulled at least 1,500 shots. I haven't done the math, but I've saved a bundle and now prefer my home lattes over Starbucks.
Unlike pod machines, you get to select the coffee beans. This is especially fun if you like to blend beans.
It's a good conversation piece.
Cons: You have to clean the cup stainless filter after each use.
The steam frother is okay but it can be a hassle and requires clean-up. I started using a stand alone frother which I prefer but the Delonghi frother will suffice.
The cup holder needs to be more substantial to hold heat when warming up. It does not retain heat well, but hey, at this price point it works.
I don't like the rubber filter gasket. It's holding up surprisingly well considering I remove the stainless steel filter form it daily, but I just don't like a piece of rubber in the path of the extraction process.
I am sure it will be a topic of conversation.
And it works very very well.
The frother felt like a cannon at first.
It works and the nossel is long enough.
The price was also attractive.
I already bought the cleaning tablets and will only use purified water.
If I get three years out of it I will be very happy.
