Both are about the same price, size and weight-the DeWalt seems a bit heavier.
The VacMaster has a Stainless Steel tank; The DeWalt had a hard plastic take. Neither will rust.
The DeWalt's hose is yellow and black and felt better-better quality.
The DeWalt's filter is almost 1" longer-and the DeWalt's is slightly wider.
The DeWalt's hose snaps into place. The VacMaster's hose pushes in and then turns to lock (see above).
The DeWalt has a soft rubber "thingee" to secure the hose (see above). Both vacs has cord storage-DeWalt has a large handle on top of the machine, VacMaster has two cord clips-one on each handle. Both rear wheels are about 8" in diameter. The DeWalt is an enclosed style and the VacMaster is an open style. Both were easy to negotiate over my newly demoed room. The DeWalt has a foot kick on the rear, like that on a moving cart, that helps you lift the front over a bump (see above).
NOW FOR THE BIG ISSUE-WHICH VAC SUCKS THE MOST: I used a professional HVAC air indicator instrument.
I could not gage FPM at the opening of the vacs or hose as it was too powerful, so I devised a simple jig that keep that instrument away by about 4 ".
At the opening in the vacs the DeWalt was 360-375 FPM. At the end of the DeWalt hose it was 390-405 FPM
The VacMaster at the opening in the stainless steel was 450 FPM, but it dropped to 350 at the end of the hose.
I'm just spit balling here, but perhaps the DeWalt hose is smoother inside than the VacMaster.
I've owned about one dozen Sears and Ridged shop vacs, many with 6.5hp ratings (for all that does you).
In my opinion, either of these vacuums will suck the fur right off your cats--well maybe not.
MY DECISION: I decided to keep the DeWalt as I could see that nice SS tank of the VacMaster slowly getting all dented up over time. I also felt the DeWalt hose was more substantial and it was slightly easier to steer around.
Mainly, the DeWalt was noticeably quieter and the VacMaster besides being louder, had a squealing sound that was annoying.
The on board tool storage is extremely useful, it is nice to know that the bits and pieces are not going to get lost in the garage, and are always with the vacuum. The hose storage and clamp is a genius idea. All in all another awesome product from DeWalt.
I am definitely recommending this to everyone.
The build quality is excellent for the price. The hose is heavier duty than the standard black shop vac hose. The vac itself is well designed and made with quality plastic. The rubber band hose attachment is the best hose storage solution I’ve come across and super quick and easy to use.
If you’re using a shopvac-style vacuuming in very dusty environments, it’s worth considering that ShopVac’s QSP line and some others exhaust through a diffuser built into the entire circumference of the vacuum head. This means you don’t get air exiting the vacuum at high velocity and stirring up dust. The trade off is that you don’t get to use the vac as a blower.
Overall, I’m really happy with the Dewalt as my criteria were maximum suction and low noise.
This unit is highly portable, you take it out of the car and can wheel it around and get going.
Very strong suction, 6.5 peak horsepower, this thing gets the job done.
Very clear instructions on how to setup, connect the front wheels, back wheels, accessory back and vacuum bag and you're ready to roll.
Overall very pleased with the product.
I don't like the attachments all that much, though they do work, otherwise I'd rate this 5 stars.
