About the author

Balked of her dream of becoming Captain JANE Kirk of the Starship Enterprise, Anne kept writing while wandering through a variety of careers as engineer, diplomat, planner, and public relations specialist. Writing isn't nearly as exciting, adventurous, or sexy as commanding a starship, but it's still a challenge and, on the days when it goes well, a heck of a lot of fun. (She tries not to think about the days when it doesn't go well!) The only real problem is that, given the number of story ideas banging around in her head, Anne's either going to have to write a whole lot faster or live a whole lot longer if she's going to get all those stories written before she dies!

These books are definitely not cozies. In a typical cozy the main character will hide everything from the police, and will always stupidly charge off completely alone with the crazed killer without telling anyone. To my delight, Maxie doesn't do that at all, though she does seem to end up face-to-face with the bad guy towards the end. I also love the semi-flirty yet competitive relationship between Maxine and Trueblood.
And then, of course, there's Amelia. In book 1 I found myself thinking it was too bad Amelia wasn't a better fairy godmother, as she could have been such a tremendous help, but now I realize that would have made Maxie's story too easy and boring. With Amelia being her rather incompetent and flawed self, it creates more of a hit and miss situation so that Maxie still has to work things out on her own. And she does!
I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a funny and enjoyable mystery with a hint of romance and no blatant sex. I'm now ordering the next book in the series in hopes the author can keep up the great storytelling.
When a senior comes into her office wanting her to investigate the death of an old friend, she takes the case even though she's not sure that a murder has occurred. Her interaction with the senior and others as the retirement resort are a delight to uphold and her trying to dig for information on what happened. Another murder (official), Amelia u to her old tricks and now wanting to be her official assistant plus the return of the hunky detective are all interwoven into a tale that spans years but only turns deadly now. Can she get to the root of the problem and find the killer even if she can't prove it? What about her other cases or the 'liberated' coffee machine from the Russian mob?
