This was an interesting little book. I came across this while looking for information about Hells Angel Bob Roberts, who was the President of the San Francisco chapter in the early 60's (he is featured in the film, "Gimme Shelter". He is the Angel w/ the short hair that appears to be giving Mick Jagger the "once over".
John Clark was childhood friends with Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead fame. They grew up together in a low income San Francisco neighborhood and shared lots of young boy adventures before Garcia became a rock god and Clark became an outlaw biker/biker rights advocate.
I was a Deadhead during the mid-1980's until Garcia passed away in 1995, so my interest in this book was twofold.
The best parts of this book are Clark's reminiscences of his boyhood with Garcia. These bittersweet memories are filled with affection and honesty. It is clear that he considered Jerry a very good friend.
The biker bits are not as cohesive, but are revealing in their simplicity. I especially enjoyed them because they remind everyone now of what outlaw motorcycle clubs were really about: big boys with big, powerful toys (motorcycles, guns, explosives) having a lot of fun while being part of an extremely loyal family of like-minded men.
I wrote a fictional account of these times myself, oddly enough with one of my main characters being names "John Clark." See link below:

Author John Clark, who grew up with Garcia in San Francisco, reveals for the first time many experiences relevant not only to diehard 'Dead Head' fans, but to anyone intrigued with the turbulent culture of rock music and motorcycle gangs from the 1960s on. Among the questions Clark tackles are how he and Garcia first met outlaw bikers, and how Garcia conceived of the Grateful Dead. Viewable for the first time are several original photos of Jerry Garcia. Praise for the book's realism comes from those close to the action. Jerry Garcia's brother Cliff says it is 'the best book I have read about my Brother.' And according to Filthy Phil, Former President of Frisco Hell's Angels, 'Dead Angel is the best I have read about the Hell's Angels. It is the truth.'

About the Author
I have written about my boyhood friend, Jerry Garcia, and my "encounter." My name is John Clark. While growing up in San Francisco, I was fortunate enough to be Jerry Garcia's best friend. We grew up on the same block, Harrington St., where we met at ages 5 and 6 years old. Jerry and I stayed in touch until his untimely death in 1995. Dead Angel shows a side of Jerry that very few people knew and most of his fans would like to know. He was a kind, gentle child, not the crazed drug addict as so many persons portrayed him to be. I know that many of his fans, world-wide, will enjoy reading about his early years as evidenced by the people who have already read my book of him so far

Presented as being a story about Jerry Garcia but he’s only in maybe 1/4 of the book. Mostly about Hell Angels, bikers and motorcycles. I’m sure Garcia helped him sell books. ThTs why I bought it. Pretty good stories, decent writing and fits my 60s obsession.

Now here's a self-published book with an interesting perspective. Although there is an editor listed, these reminiscences need a REAL editor. I couldn't find any evidence of an editor's touch. There's even a spot in the middle of a sentence containing a question mark where a noun should go. I'm assuming that this book is a transcription of a recording, and the transcriber didn't understand that word!
Interesting voice from Garcia's childhood buddy who became involved with SF motorcycle gangs in the late fifties and sixties. His perspective is limited, but I enjoyed reading a bit about Jerry as a boy. Recommended for hardcore fans only.

A very interesting story of the childhood friendship between Jerry Garcia and John Clark. It depicts San Francisco in the old days before the high tech revolution. The second half of the book about John Clark's teenage years hanging around the local bike clubs and being a member of the Presidents MC, which later became the HAMC Daly City charter, is a good look at the early days of motorcycling in the Bay area. Worth the read.

I thought this was a great book. As mentioned in a previous review by L V Sage, I was also looking into information on Bob Roberts, and found this little gem. As a new Altamont concert book is due out this summer, perhaps we will get a bit more information on Bob Roberts and the role he played. He seems more elusive than say Sonny Barger, and they were contemporaries and I believe knew each other. Interesting time.

John tells an amazing story about an amazing bunch of guys. Not only Jerry, but the group around him. I had the pleasure of meeting filthy Phil, a larger than life character. All the other characters that ran in that circle were wild & free and John described all of them so accurately, you will feel like you were there.. His story will bring you back in time. It was a great ride and john sounds like he loved every minute of it. Read this book, you will be sure to enjoy it.

This is a very interesting book about music legend Gerry Garcia"s early days growing up in California and a what it was like being part of a biker club. John Clark gives a first hand honest depiction of both. A long time grateful dead fan and rider myself I connected with JC's story of what it was like in the early days of motorcycle clubs and the comradeship and brotherhood of most bikers.

Not the lengthiest tome. Snappy however and a good insight into the goings on in Frisco during the 60's. Overall a good read, from the authors own memories of that time.
