Georgianna, the main character, is a medic for the Veniche, which is the indigenous population of the world upon which this is set. The Veniche , though, are not one people; there are multiple tribes, and some don't like some of the others very much. Some are rather friendly with the Adveni, the race that took over the world. Others are quite hostile to the Adveni, trying to get them off their world. Georgianna, as a medic, is able to move between many of these tribes, and to a point among the Adveni as well, since she acts as a medic for imprisoned Veniche at one of the Adveni prisons.
Georgianna is a tough character, possibly sometimes a little too tough for some readers. Putting it mildly, she is NOT a refined lady. Her character is well-defined, as are those of most of the people around her. This character definition, along with the world-building of the Veniche people, is well done. What I found lacking, though, was the same definition and background of the Adveni. It is hard to understand why they took over this world and what they want. It is plain, though, that the Adveni are a very strict and forceful society, since they will imprison a Veniche for very minor offenses, and they are more than willing to carry out the death penalty or sell Veniche into slavery as well.
While the weather on the planet was mentioned in the book synopsis as a major thing, I didn't get the same feeling, other than it got very hot and very cold, enough that some Veniche became seasonally migratory. Otherwise, I did not see it as a major factor.
The Veniche largely live underground, travelling through tunnels. I had a hard time keeping up with a lot of this movement, and how it connected into the above-ground society of the Adveni. Overall, I thought the Veniche-Adveni paradigm was lacking as to why things were as they were, lowering the intensity that should be there when one society is subjugated to another.
It is quite possible much of this will be answered in the second book. There is quite a cliffhanger at the end of the first book, although if one reads enough of this type literature, you can almost guess what occurs.
I enjoyed the story well enough, though the slow pace in the middle pulled down my rating some. I think it is a worthwhile read, but be prepared that the answers to some questions will require reading the second book.
Set on another occupied planet, aliens take over. The original race is placed in prisons for life (unless sold as slaves). People are sent to the tombs for petty crimes never to be seen or heard from again, unless friends can break them out. The break out is almost impossible once a neck brace is installed on a purchased slave. Greoginna is a traveling medic for the prison. She is one of the original race and comes only when called. The Land is either unbearable hot or cold, forcing the original people to live under ground in tunnels. Trying to help a childhood friend free his future wife sold into slavery, Ginna puts her own life in danger lives to regrate it.
Dead and Buryd is gritty and dark with a touch of romance. It has a strong, kickass heroin that survives through alien invasion, colonization, and war. Filled with suspense, subterfuge and treachery, you do not want to miss out on reading this novel that will hold on to you for dear life.
Highly recommended read.
The book does end on a cliffhanger (which is my only complaint), but the good news is that the second part is already out. The cliffhanger itself is excellent, as it does make you want to continue with the story!
The author has created a world of extremes and many twists and turns in the plot. Keeps you suspicious of all the characters all the time. Made it a little hard to bond with the various characters but definitely keeps you wondering.
All in all a fun read.
I was gifted a copy of this book by the author.
Georgianna is a medic on an earthlike planet which has had the unfortunate experience of having been through some catastrophic climate changes. While some of the inhabitants escaped into space on ships, many were left to tunnel into the earth and adapt to the changes. When deemed safe, the escapees return and declare authority over the ones left behind.
Imprisonment, slavery, torn relationships, drama and suspense. This book has it all. This book will appeal to anyone with an interest and love for dystopian fantasies.
