The Dead is five new original songs, plus adaptations of three older songs. "At the Conoco" and "Broke Down Cowboy" are character sketches of working people. "Slave to the Muse" and "The Dead" are original lyrical songs. "Johnson Boys" is a traditional old-time country song.
"The Brown Girl" is a Child ballad, also known as "Lord Thomas and Lady Ellender," with an original melody. "God's Grandeur" is my musical interpretation of a 1918 poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins.
"Searching the Desert for the Blues" is a song written by Blind Willie McTell in the early 1930s.
