I reviewed The Ex-File, the first book in this series, when it originally came out last year, and I had really enjoyed it. I mistakenly expected this book to be quite similar. While it did have similarities, I will say it was a completely different book.
The female lead, Nahia, is a blue-haired non-practicing witch who is clairvoyant and clairaudient and her hobby is paranormal investigating. It was impossible for me not to like her. She's sweet, brave and full of life, despite being obsessed with the dead. She has insecurities, but she doesn't let them get in her way.
The lead, Detective Nico Verrazano, is delicious: tall, dark and handsome with a strong personality and a golden heart. He is a skeptic of ghosts...until he encounters one with Nahia and it changes his entire perspective.
Their connection is immediate and white hot, despite their initial reluctance. They are as different as night from day, yet they compliment each other perfectly. Add in the addition of Nigel, their "matchmaker", you get an explosive cast of characters you will remember long after you close the book.
I like that the subplot is almost equal to the main, romantic plot. Some romance authors get carried away by the romance and the backstory suffers for it. Craig didn't do that; instead, she made sure we were constantly reminded about the ghosts, and Nahia's abilities. The addition of Nico being a psychologist and literal scientist makes things more interesting. It brings out Nahia's concerns that he'll think she's schizophrenic and makes him doubtful about what he sees, though he trusts Nahia's powers without fail.
In most books, that would be the flaw: how can a psychology major just simply believe a girl who claims the voices she hears are ghosts? While it is unrealistic on the surface, I can understand why for two reasons: one, he saw the ghost for himself. Two, he is in love. Love makes one do, say and believe things that they normally wouldn't.
Yes, this was a long review for me. Why? Because I loved this book and will put it on my "reread" shelf in my Kindle! Wonderful for fans of paranormal romance!
Nahia is sweet, yet spooky in a mysterious way. And smart and clever and just all around yummy. Her abilities give her some insecurities, but she more than compensates with a wicked sharp tongue and fantastic sense of adventure.
Nico is a tall, cool drink of water with a kick. Wowzaa! He makes me want to commit felonies and bring my own handcuffs. Smart and sexy, he's a great skeptical component to Nahia, especially when he's schooled in the poor manners of the dead...lol.
The characters have wonderful chemistry, the ancillary characters (alive and dead) are plenty interesting, and the storyline has some fun twists and turns and is never boring or slow.
Another Alexis D. Craig book on my shelf...hope to have plenty more!
Alexis writes so vividly, it stimulates the imagination. The love scenes are a wonderful mix of hot, intimate, and emotional. I loved the storyline and characters. And, I had to ensure I read the chapters in the haunted mansion during daylight hours to avoid sleep disturbances. :) (I have a love/hate relationship with all things suspenseful and scary. I want to read or watch, but often regret it later.)
Added bonus for me... I live in Indy, and can imagine local landmarks and restaurants as the scene locations. I swear I've seen that mansion on North Meridian, and my imagination decided that the family's restaurant was a popular one south of downtown.
Just can't say enough about it! LOVE!
The love interest characters draw you in with the immediate connection and keep you going throughout the entire book up until the end.
Anyone who has lived in or visited Indianapolis will enjoy the added bonus of the landmarks but if you have not lived there not to worry the author gives great details for you to build your own scenes.
Fantastic storyline draws in the reader and will hold them throughout the entire book.
I loved every page in this book.
