The author creates a good foundation in the beginning so that the reader has insight regarding the interaction of people in town. I don’t think anyone in the entire town liked Isabel but to murder her – well that’s another level.
Adding to the mystery are a couple mystery boxes that I knew would not bode well when first mentioned in the story. It was the extra touches like this one that added good depth to this story. Add in some drug matters and yet another dead body and we have a book worth recommending.
I liked the main character, Leah. She was very realistically created and it made me wonder if the author based any of the characters that she knew in real life.
The story is created in first person and Leah’s sense of dry humor shines. I think writing it in first person really made this story extra good as it added a good layer.
I enjoyed reading a quality mystery that kept me guessing without graphic violence. There is a nice romantic undertone as the secondary genre in this book and I don’t recall any vulgar language. Not to sound prudish but it is nice to be able to enjoy a book without having to read a peppering of swear words throughout.
The main character, Leah, has a no nonsense, self -deprecating way about her but you also see her intelligence.
The author drops clues throughout and sometimes I thought something would turn out one way only to be nicely surprised that the author took us in another direction. There was a continuous hum of suspense that kept me guessing and on my toes throughout the story.
Dead in a Dumpster is the first book in the Leah Norwood Mystery series written by B.L. Blair. Set in what is considered a historical site Reed Hill, Texas not far from Dallas, Leah Norwood is the owner of a fragrance and lotion store called Scents and Sensibility. Scents and Sensibility is located on the corner of Main and Oak and has Nora’s Bakery on one side and Patina, an antique store on the other. Each business was provided two parking spots behind their store. One was for the owner/manager’s car and the other for delivery trucks. The day started off on a good foot but swiftly started turning in the other direction. Upon arrival at the store to fill in for an employee who had called off, Leah found the parking spots for Scents and Sensibility were being used by the neighboring business Patina’s delivery truck leaving the waiting delivery truck for Leah’s business waiting. This was not the first time this had happened and Leah was determined to let Patina’s store manager Isabel Meeks know that it needed to be remedied now. Entering Patina, Leah calls out for Isabel and realizes that Isabel is not alone. Isabel’s assistant, Trent, and the owner of Patina, Anthony Thorpe, were involved in a serious discussion. Leah explains the situation requesting the truck moved. Mr. Thorpe, unhappy to hear about the problem, assures Leah that Isabel will see it is taken care of immediately. Upon returning to assure the truck driver the problem will be solved soon, Leah enters Scents and Sensibility to open for the day. Friday is payday for the Leah’s employees and Leah stayed late to prepare payroll. Gathering the trash Leah heads to the dumpster in the alley. To Leah’s horror, what does she find but Isabel Meek’s body with wide eyed stare looking at her in the dumpster. Leaving out a scream and then losing her lunch Leah then calls 911 to report her findings. This begins the investigation to how Isabel Meeks’ body ended up in the dumpster and who did her in and also will a relationship develop for Leah during all this. I can’t wait to see further developments in Leah’s life in the next book.
