A surprising blend of genres that gives you a comfortable feeling

I'm not an avid reader, so my review might not be very good for you literary buffs out there, I'll try my best though.

I wanted to give this review a 4.5 stars so I rounded it up since this is a first time thing, that doesn't mean that I found it perfect though.

The beginning of the story kind of drops you into a scenario where you get kind of an early sense of the writing style; tons of descriptive imagery used that seems like too much at first, but starts to blend with the plot well a page or so in. I will say to keep your focus during the first couple of pages, the book doesn't really ease you into anything, but drops you headfirst into Cailen's eventful walk back to her apartment. Once I recovered from the abrupt beginning and the flurry of descriptive imagery, I start to enjoy the writing style and Cailen's cynical and humorous inner dialogue.

Within a couple of pages you already find a few quote-worthy sayings filled with hilarity and absurdity. Jessica Chavez did a great job using over the top descriptive imagery to add humor into relatively dire situations. Subtle touches of the right kind of humor are added into certain areas that seem appropriate, just enough to have the seriousness of the story drive though, without the humor taking you too off track. There are some areas where I felt a chapter could have been split up, some seem to go on forever while others seem short in comparison. If I'm done reading, I like to finish at the end of a chapter, which was a little hard to do in some instances. On the other hand, this story is enjoyed best when read in as few sittings as possible in my opinion, since it doesn't have too much filler in it, it requires your focus many times that is hard to muster when resuming after putting it down a day or two ago.

Overall, the blend of multiple genres keeps the story fresh, a lot of characters are introduced, but thankfully the main characters you care about keep the focus mostly without being distracted. If I had one suggestion, it would be to read this in an environment that fits the theme, by yourself and in a quiet area, that is when I found it most enjoyable. The artwork is pretty nice, wish there was a bit more of it, but I can't complain. A surprising blend of genres that gives you a comfortable feeling, hopefully more work comes from this as I could see it being the start to a niche following with the interesting blend of genres.

Hopefully that review made sense, I would definitely give this a read for the price, you're bound to put on a few grins while reading it at least!
