A paranormal mystery set in the town of Dead Eye. It's a strangely magical town with shifters, witches, vampires and others.
Jack is from an alternate series of the author but you do not need to read that series to fully enjoy this light mystery. It has lots of fun character commentary, which may be from Tess, the main heroine, but it's a blast to read. I am anxious to read the next in the series to see how Jack and Tess build their relationship and to find out the next weird or kooky event that causes his PI firm to get to work. Humor, a mystery, good over evil. What more could you want?
Jack Shephard, a cat shifter, returns to Dead End. He learns of his Uncle's unsolved murder.
Tess Callahan runs the pawn shop of Jacks's uncle. Jack and Tess are now co-owners. Jack will help Tess to solve the murder while protecting Tess. And in the process, an attraction is being slowly built.
“saying “downtown Dead End” was like saying “giant postage stamp,” it wasn’t a long trip. Our little town was home for maybe five thousand or so people, and a magnet for misfits of all types—human, supernatural, and other. I hadn’t yet determined exactly what “other” meant, but if aliens from outer space ever came to Earth, they could show up in Dead End and nobody would even blink.”

“Are you smelling me?” He sounded amused. “I thought that was more a cat thing than a human thing.”
I closed my eyes and prayed for the patron saint of pawnshops and stupid people to open a hole in the floor and swallow me. Unfortunately, nothing happened, which just reminded me that I hadn’t been to church in nearly a month. Needed to add that to the list. It was getting to be a long freaking list.”

“I told myself that my mouth was just watering because of the doughnuts, but it’s hard to lie to yourself successfully, so I didn’t believe me.”

This story features Jack Shepherd, a solid six-foot, soldiering, motorcycling Bengal tiger shifter, and Tess Callahan, co-owner of Dead End Pawn with Jack. As the story opens, Jack has recently become aware that his uncle, Jeremiah, passed away and named him in his estate. His arrival in Dead End is heralded by the appearance of another dead body at the back door of Dead End Pawn. Jack had been unaware until then that his uncle had been murdered and that the crime remains unsolved. Jack vows then and there to uncover the killer and exact justice. Unfortunately for Jack and Tess, who join together in the quest to track down those responsible, danger and bad guys are lurking at every turn. The couple is kept busy deciphering clues and staying alive.
I caught myself laughing out loud at the bantering between these two primary characters. Jack is sexy, protective and fun. Tess is spunky, resourceful and endowed with an intriguing super power of her own. Interestingly, Tess had a crush on Jack way back when she was sixteen. It’s been ten years since she’s seen him and she swears she’s totally over those swoony thoughts– until Jack walks in to Dead End Pawn and the chemistry sparks between them. I know this is a cozy mystery, but I honestly hankered for more romance between the two. Is it too much to hope that the next book will be a bit steamier? I plan to check it out soon!
I also want to go back and learn more about Jack’s rip-roaring past. I believe if I’d had the connection to Jack from the beginning, I’d have upped my rating. Please take my newness to her writing and to these characters into account as it appears that Jack is much-loved going into this series.
Following please find a few of my favorite quotes from Dead Eye:
“Tess, someone just dumped a dead body at your back door."
"Not again," I moaned.
He whirled around. "Not again? What the hell does that mean?"
My knees gave out, and I collapsed back against the counter. "That's how I found Jeremiah.”
There’s just not a huge market in used skulls these days.
“The secret about tigers,” he said, blinking owlishly, “is that tigers bounce.”
Before I could even process the ridiculousness of that, he leaned forward and kissed me. Jack was a champion kisser, even while drunk. I threw my arms around his neck, because my brain started to melt into my shoes.
That’s when the universe exploded around us…
If you are a fan of suspenseful, fun-filled, action-packed paranormal urban fantasies and/or are a Sookie Stackhouse fan (True Blood), you won’t want to let this series pass you by. Alyssa has been on my want-to-read list ever since she appeared on some panels I attended at the Coastal Magic Convention last year. I regret that it’s taken me so long to dive in to Dead Eye’s quirky world of murders, mayhem and dark magic and can’t wait to discover what will happen next in Dead End!
1. It was fun. It truly was a fun read. It kept a smile on my face the whole time!
2. The characters. The good guys were good and the bad guys were bad. I'm all for the mystery of what side do they fall on questions...but sometimes the black and white of it makes a better story. Tess is one of the nicest people, but not too nice. She had depth and a back bone.
Jack...I like this side of him. I wish I could have gotten his pov little but tess did a good job describing him. (Alyssa deserves some credit as well)
I want to see more of Susan and see her grow, there was a hint of some depth to her but not enough where I can form an opinion.
3. Now I personally like a little more steam in the romance department, BUT not all plots or stories can handle it, or characters. It does not fit in with tess to jump in the sack so soon. Book 2 maybe? So the lack of steamy did not upset me at all with this book. The romance looks to be headed in the right direction and I'm ok with that. Though please be steam in book 2.
If I had to say something about this book that I did not like (other then the wondering if steam in book 2) it would be.....well...I seriously have nothing. So there you go! Now on to book 2 ( where I'm hoping to fine some hot tiger love!
