novelopinion.org/2011/11/27/bluegrass-state-of-mind-by-kathleen-brooks/

This was such an enjoyable break from some of the heavier stuff I have been reading. I love all that crazy, heavy reading but sometimes it's good to settle into light-hearted romance.
Kathleen Brooks' Bluegrass State of Mind was just the book I needed. It is full of endearing characters in a 'Mayberry' type small town who seem to embrace you as they embrace the main character, McKenna.

McKenna and her friend Danielle witness a crime perpetrated by McKenna's boyfriend and the law partners from her prestigious firm in New York. The group also contained a high-powered Senator and McKenna knew their only hope of survival was to split up and disappear.
McKenna ends up applying for the Assistant DA position in the small town of Keeneston hoping to use an old friend from her childhood as a way in.

The important things about this story are how it made me feel. I loved the town and it's citizens. I felt the author truly knew these people and they were not one-dimensional characters. The romance between McKenna and Will are secondary for me but still well written and important to the story. The added suspense of McKenna's past gave the over all plotline flavor.

I am not a huge Romance reader these days but I am thankful Kathleen Brooks asked for the review. I am happily adding the rest of the series to my TBR shelf and will continue to follow Ms. Brooks future works.

I recommend this book highly to all lovers of Romance and those that need to change it up from their typical reading preferences.

I am so glad I found this author. It's amazing how many really good authors are indies. This book is the third in the series and I am impressed by how much Kathleen has grown in so short a time as an author. I liked the first one, the second one was even better and this one the best. I'm looking foward to seeing what she has in store for us after this.

These books take place in Kentucky in a small town where everyone knows everyone else and looks out after each other. After reading these books, I want to live in a town like this. I loved all the main characters but liked this last couple the best. I loved Paige's brothers and how they tried to protect her. I even liked the three old busybody sisters and found them really funny.

This author has one tiny quirk that bothers me some. She very rarely uses contractions. It makes it awkard to read. But even some of my oldtime favorites had their quirks, it's what makes them who they are. Patricia Cornwell wrote in the present tense, that bothered me but I use to love her books, until she used up her main character, Kay Scarpetta. Johnathon Kellerman was one of my favorites but it bothered me the way he described, in detail, how the main character got from one part of L.A. to the other.

I guess if I had to sum up all three of these books, I would say that their characters are all lovable and compliment each other, so it is a fine study in character development that we could all learn from. It's hard to believe that this is only her third book!

I really liked these books! I read all three on my Kindle in about a week or less, I couldn't put them down :). The author does a great job of keeping you in the story/stories with a little bit of drama here, some romance there, and a dollop of suspense to keep you hanging, all covered in Southern Charm. She intertwines the stories of three different friends and how they experience the continuing story line that flows easily from one book to the next. The characters feel like real people that you wish you knew and had in your life. I'm looking forward to the expansion/spin-off trilogy to come!

I reviewed the first two books, and here's what I think of the third book: 3 stars is generous.

I'm sorry. This book is so badly written. The story line and characters could be SOOOOO much better! But this is just so unbelievable!

Throughout this book, I was almost yelling out loud about how dumb it was. A SNIPER is after Paige. A SNIPER who has killed at least 22 people. And by Cole living with her, she's going to be safe? By him walking down the street with her, that keeps her safe from a SNIPER who tried to kill the other two girls? SERIOUSLY??? They put a fake obituary in the papers for the two shot girls, so now the assassin believes they're dead- even though the two men in their lives are still at the hospital every day? REALLY??!!

These people are in their late 20's to mid-30's. They act like middle schoolers. Do adults REALLY do the, "I love you, but I think I hate you, so we're going to fight until we realize we love each other" thing??? It was so over-played in this book between Paige and Cole. Annoyingly so. You either have sparks and like someone, or you don't. You don't suddenly realize you like someone after whatever....

The thing is... I couldn't stop reading. I really wanted to find out what happened, because I liked the story and the characters. But this book was actually painful for me to get through. There are those cheesy romance novels that are so bad, but it doesn't matter because you expect them to be light-hearted and bad. But this has too much serious matter in it to be one of those. And when you add a bunch of drama, murder, mystery, and whatnot to the book, you expect a better story line and better character development. This book was just unbelievable. And I hate being hard on someone's writing, because they put a lot of work into it. But in this case, the author added too much she didn't know about, and you should always write what you know, so the story is believable. *sigh*

I read the first book & was disappointed with the editing. But I took another chance on this author becuase I felt she had potential. While the editing was better I hate the way she ended this book. The story line was rushed & I don't like being left hanging at the end. Not sure that I will spend another dime on this author

This is a entertaining series and I can't wait for more books by this author. At first when I started reading her undercover book, I was confused with all the silly characters in it. I have never read a book that has this many characters that grow on you as you keep reading more and more.

Dead Heat sure was hot. All the action going on, the love story, the complicated relationships, and victory in the courtroom. I couldn't get enough. I have to read about the brothers now. Thanks Kathleen for a wonderful series.

Paige and Cole's story ends this series and it one of the really good ones. Poor Cole when he tries to wade through the brothers that are Paige's not to mention the parents. Thankfully for her, he is more than up to the challenge and it is a very satisfying story.

I have to say I have loved this entire series set in Kentucky among the horsey set and this terrific little town. It is home town America and the local grapevine at it's best. They will make you crazy but god help the one who harms one of their own or one even precieved to be there own.

It has the things a romance and a mega mystery should have keeps you turning those pages as fast as you can possibly read one.

If you haven't read the bluegrass series start with book one and read them in order you will fall in love with them.

ENJOY
