"I don't like horror novels. I don't much care for the fantasy genre. And buckets of gore put me off. So how come I read two of these books? I'll be honest with you: I was sort of trapped into it (don't ask). And what do you know, I loved them, notwithstanding the above. First of all,, Goldberg and Rabkin are keen observers and fine writers. Exposition, dialogue, plotting, description . . . they're all first-rate: economical, coherent, and convincing. And Mathew Cahill is a genuinely intriguing character. And--to my surprise--darned if the books aren't funny. To put it in a nutshell, I simply couldn't put them down. No, really, I mean it. Literally. Once I started, I read each one through in a single night, which isn't usual for me. And now I'm hooked on the series. My God, what's happening to me? " -Aaron Elkins author of The Worst Thing, Uneasy Relations, and The Dark Place --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

In "Face of Evil," our protagonist for the series, Matthew Cahill, died in an avalanche three months ago. When his body is found and the coroner starts to do the autopsy on him, we find out that Matt is still alive. Now this is a humble man, a sawyer/logger whose favorite pastime is chopping wood with his Grandpa's axe. And now he's back from the dead and something/someone evil followed him back. He now can see evil in people's faces and he knows when terrible things are going to happen.
In "Ring of Knives," Matt somehow hears about a patient at the Carthage Mental Health Center who is seeing some of the same things that he has. And he wants to find out what this man might know. He arrives at the facility and jumps into a big pile of hurt.
In "Hell in Heaven," Matt rides into the very small town of Heaven, Washington and the out-of-date townspeople seem to be expecting him. He finds a bloody feud that has been going on for a very long time, overseen by a very nasty woman.
These stories are not for the faint of heart. There is blood, guts, sex, more blood, more guts...you get the idea. Good thing that Matt now seems to heal much more quickly than an average person and boy, does he know how to fight. But the stories are well written and I enjoyed them. I am starting on Volume 2 next.
