The Dead Man Vol 4: Freaks Must Die, Slaves to Evil, and The Midnight Special Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 93 ratings

After dying in a freak accident, Matt Cahill inexplicably “wakes up” three months later with the disturbing ability to see things—terrible things—that others cannot. Drafted as a warrior in the battle between good and evil, Matt will stop at nothing to destroy the malevolent Mr. Dark. In The Dead Man Volume 4, a trio of sinister new stories tracks the reluctant hero on his nightmarish quest.

On a quest to find a kidnapped child, Matt discovers an underworld of people with uncanny powers living in the shadows of New York City, trying to elude a ruthless force that’s vowed that the Freaks Must Die. Matt must run a deadly race against time to save the child, and the entire “freak” community, from bloody annihilation.

Matt goes to a town where all the cops are corrupt Slaves to Evil, terrorizing everyone and allowing crime to run rampant…but before he can battle them, he’s shot by a gun-toting teenager out to avenge Matt’s killing of her brother. Now Matt is trapped between hordes of deranged, killer cops and an innocent girl hell-bent on revenge.

The re-release of a cheesy 1970s zombie flick is sparking horrific bloodshed whenever it’s screened…and Matt Cahill is determined to stop it. His quest takes him to a grindhouse theatre in L.A., where a screening of The Midnight Special begins a night of unmitigated terror that will either put an end to Mr. Dark’s reign of evil…or mark a blood-soaked new beginning.

Love the series. Love the concept. Love the use of a different writer(s) for every episode. And I am not even a horror fan. I am just a sucker for chain stories. Like buying the stories on the cheap too by purchasing them by Volume. But now I have read Volume IV and have run out of volume. Not sure I can wait it out until the next installment of 3 tales. For those who don't know, the Series, first dead and then resurrected hero Matt Cahill is kind of like the kid in Sixth Sense, but instead of seeing Dead People he sees the evil in people as if they were dead rotting corpses. That and the fact that he carries grandfather's axe to help get him through a tough day. He travels from town to town and has nothing but tough days. All the authors are first class and write with skill and finesse. Except for when Matt has to use the axe of course. Every place he goes is a different story of good verses evil. Which is nice, The Dead Man series is not just another mindless rehash of Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Dawn of the Dead. This series has some thought behind it and could go on forever because you never can run out of ideas for a crusading evil seeing visionary with an axe his grandfather made from a iron meteorite.

If you haven't tried Lee Goldberg then give him a shot. You've got to love with Matt Cahill who finds danger at every twist and turn

These stories involve a man who apparently died in a snow avalanche & came back to life. The stories were strange to me but I read all of them. I doubt I would read any more of them if they are available but it makes me wonder if there really are people like this among us!

I have read almost all of the series now. Just can not stop reading them. You will just have to keep reading or else go nuts! At least that's how I've been. I like that there is not a huge amount of bad words in the series. So I can let my daughter read as well. She likes these kinds of stories as well.

The Dead Man books are always a good read. Wish the stories were a bit longer but I still like reading them. Gotta love stories about an axe wielding hero

This volume has a different feel than the first 3, I don't know that I can quantify it, the stories just didn't hold my interest in the same way.
