About the Author

Luke Murphy was born in Shawville, a small rural community in Western Quebec.

He played six years of professional hockey before retiring in 2006.

His road to novelist began in the winter of 2000, after sustaining a season ending eye injury. He continued to hobby write through the years, honing his craft, making time between work and family obligations.

He constantly read, from novels in his favorite genres to books written by experts in the writing field. He made friends (published and unpublished authors), learning what it took to become successful.

Feeling that he was finally prepared, in the winter of 2007, Murphy started to write Dead Man’s Hand. It took him two years to complete the first draft of his novel.

He hired Ms. Jennifer Lyons, of the Jennifer Lyons Literary Agency, and in 2012, signed his first publishing contract with Imajin Books.

Murphy lives in Shawville with his wife, two daughters and a pug. He is a teacher who holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing, and a Bachelor of Education (Magna Cum Laude).

If you like James Patterson's books, then you'll love Luke Murphy's 'Dead Man's Hand'! The writing style of Murphy is similar to Patterson, but that's where the comparison ends. Murphy has his own unique take on things, and that kept the book fresh all the way to the end. The action started from the first page, and never let up. Your mind will always be racing ahead trying to figure out what will happen next. If you're looking for a good book to read, you won't be disappointed with 'Dead Man's Hand'. A word of caution to potential readers though...do not start this book if you have things you need to get done! This is a book that you'll want to read from cover to cover without putting it down. I recommend this book to everyone!!

There is nothing I can add to the previously posted reviews, except to say "me too". Since I have to use more words to meet the requirement for submitting a review, I will say that I really enjoyed this well written tale and that I congratulate the author on a very fine effort. I look forward to reading more of his work.

A debut novel with much to recommend it. The writing technique is strong, the characters well-drawn and interesting, and the schemes and counter-schemes abound. There were one or two cringe-worthy passages like the one where two cops discussed the department's policy on firearms. A classic "As you know, Bob" info-dump this, that had no bearing on anything, and should have been excised by an editor. There is not much evidence of editing, generally, but still, a worthy effort over all.

What spoiled this book for me and reduced it from 4 to 3.2 stars, was the plot which I found poorly constructed and repetitive.

If you like murder & suspense this is a great read. You just want to keep turning the pages. The author puts a different twist on it by introducing the killer early but then you have to figure out how Calvin is not going to be accused of murder. At the end of the book you just want to continue on to a next one. A great first book by new author Luke Murphy.

From the first page I was hooked. I enjoyed Dead Man's Hand, and I liked how quick-paced it was. I didn't want to put my Kindle down. I look forward to more books from Luke Murphy!

The main character in the book could be anyone and everyone. It's a story of a man that did the bext he could with what he had. Knew he had some moral issues but dealt with them in a manner that he could live and abide with. There are many issues brought up, race, trust, love, and fortitude that can be applied to anyones lives and the author delves into each one of them in a manner to explain them and thoughtfully tells how the character finds ways to either resove them or live with them. I also like the interplay with the other characters in the book and that there weren't so many characters in the story that it takes half the book to build their character. It got right down to the action right out of the gate, raised dust down the road and he came out a winner by crossing the line far ahead of the competion! Do yourslef a favor and sit down to read this book with nothing in the way till the end.

There's nothing incompetent about this novel. It gives us a protagonist and manages to encourage us to sympathize with someone who is by normal standards a monster. So, kudos. And the prose is fine: it's not like this book is full of glaring errors. But where it lost me is when Dale gets in the car with his partner, and we get "...match to the Black Orchid case." Then, a new paragraph: "The Black Orchid case involved, blah, blah, blah." No. This is either very inexperienced or very lazy storytelling. I'm going to assume it's inexperience. You just can't introduce something new to a story in this way: it makes it seem as if you're making it up as you're going along. If the Black Orchid case is going to be relevant to the novel, then you have to have it introduced before the partner starts talking about it. You know, Dale sees a blurb about it while reading the news online or perhaps his email. Then, we're invested in it, so when it comes up again, it seems organic.

Keep writing, though.
