-Story(10/10):
You are once again the lovable Isaac Clarke, who is awesome and can now talk. Don't worry, they haven't made him annoying, they seem to have made his character jusr right. He is no longer on the USG Ishimura, he is now in the sprawl, a huge city on saturn. He is battling Dementia and alot more necromorphs.
The struggle with Isaac and his dementis adds alot to the story and the converations you have with other survivors are never boring. All of the audio logs you find around tell you interesting storys about people, and there are literally hundereds of posters and secrets to find all around Daed Space 2.
-Graphics(10/10):
AMAZING is the only word to describe this. The developers have managed technical mastery. The amount of work they put into every little detail is amazing.
All of the necromorphs and Issac's suits are extremely well detailed and look amazing on an HD TV.
What really gets you about the presentation is the haunting, terrifying atmosphere. You are completly ingrossed in this creepy world. And wow, is it disturbing. The gore and horrifying images are even more gruesome than the first game. You do not want to play this if you cannot take this. And it wouldn't be weird for someone to be disturbed by the horrible monster design and messed up deaths. It's a good thing the developers have messed up minds becuase, we love it!
Another thing is just the amount of posters and writing on the wall. It's amazing, and just adds to your immersion and a better understand of this world you are stuck in.
-Sound(10/10):
Your walking down a hallway, and as you walk by a mutilated corpse, you hear footsteps. Your scared to go on, but you know you must, to get to the end. You hear some disgusting noises. Next thing you know, you got a necromorph exploding in your face!!
The sound design is downright creepy and, well, disgusting. In a good way. At one point, while listening to an enemy(Cyst), I couldn't find the enemy to kill it and make that sound stop happening, because I thought I was going to be sick. The sound and music will have you always on edge and creep you out.
When your in vaccums with no air the sound is pefectly musted sounding, as it would sound without air. By the way, don't let you oxygen tank run out of gas(duh).
All the voice acting is also top notch, as well.
-Gameplay(10/10):
The gameplay, at it's core, has not changed. You still must strategiacally dismember your emenys to kill them. Which is still awsome and unique. There is still no HUD, and you really need to watch your ammo and health supply in the later levels, or you will die, for sure. You can still use stasis to freeze necromorphs, which you will need to do. You better upgarade your stasis module. You'll thank me later.
You can also pick up objects or dead necro's limbs to impale enemy's. This is also very useful.
They have added lots of new guns and suits to collect, as well as every gun from the first game. The pulse rife's alternate fire is now useful! Thank you, Visceral Games! The old one just wasted ammo. The new weapons are a nice addition, and different people will like different guns, depending on what stratigies they want to use.
You can upgarade your weapons using nodes, which are plentiful if you look around a little, which you'll want to do. You can also buy and sell stuff at the store using credits(currency).
The zero G sections have been changed from jumping from wall to wall, to actually having free control of flying around space. This is really cool and it's fun to fight enemy's while floating around.
Sometimes Isaac feels the need to "flame on!" and have some little cinematic awesome moments that I won't spoil for you.
The overall gameplay is extremly intense, Especially on the later levels!!!!!!!! I was always on edge and scared to go into the next room on the later levels because it got SO hard and I did not want to be annhilated be a powerful necromorphs. I HATE those improved enemys later in the game!!! At points I was literally begging the game, "Please don't be an emeny, Please don't be an emeny, Please don't be an emeny!"
It gets harder as you go along, so save up that ammo and health or you'll end up paraniod, like me!
There are slot more simple tweaks to the game, that help it so much, but it would be hard to mention them all, so I won't. Okay, I'll try. You have a hacking mini-game, improved locator, better melee moves(not just flailing your arms about uselessly), the flamethrower is better, tons of new enemys, more disturbing moments, cinaematic moments, more intense fights, Cooler suits, more nodes, more enviroments, better text logs, and I think that's all.
Also, the controls feel so much smoother them dead space 1, you really feel like you have more control over Isaac.
-Multiplayer(10/10):
The mutiplayer was developed by a different team, and was added on for people to play if they wanted to. The developers stressed that people don't need to play it, that's why it has no trophies/achievements. There is enough in the game without it, but it's there, so you might as well try it, you may like it! I did.
In it you can either play as humans tring to complete objectives(transporting a thing across the maps, activating stuff, excetera) or necromorphs tring to stop them. You can play as 4 different enemys. The lurker, which is the crawling bay thing that is good at long range(my favorite), The pack which is good when you have other pack buddies, the spitter which has a long range spitting attack and good melee attacks, and puker that pukes on stuff.
It is equally as fun being a human as it is a necromorph, suprisingly. Neither side feels unbalanced.
As you gain experience points and level up, you earn new weapons, suits, extras, and necromorph damage upgrades. This is obviosly not new.
I like the Multiplayer because it requires you to work together on either team. It can get very intense when a bunch of enemy players team up and attack you. Better be sure you got a teammate nearby to help you, especially if an pack or lurker is around that can easily exicute you. Teamwork is key and the community knows that, and will work together. The community is very helpful and no one has ever trash talked in any game I have been in(I know, that's a new concept).
It's a great to play when you get too scared to play the main story. You can ignore, but you shouldn't because it's fun and not "flat" like IGN claims. Just ask the people playing online, who are alreaty really high ranks.
-Value/replayability(10/10):
Other than the game being so good that you will want to play it again, there are alot of reasons to replay Dead Space 2. All of your awesome weapons and suits can be carried over in new game +. You can upgrade and try out more weapons, and it takes a little while to upgrade everything. New suits are avalible only in a second playthrough, and the scares don't always come in the same place, so watch out!
There are also tons of difficulty levels(I haven't touched them yet), including a Hardcore mode, where you must beat the game using only 3 save slots and when you die, you go back to your last save. What?!?!?!?!? That's overkill, if you can beat that, you're a Dead Space god.
The muliplayer can also add alot to the game.
Definatly worth the $60.
-Overall(10/10):
This game is truly perfection. Ready for it? As a big horror fan, this is THE best horror game I've played.
Only don't play it if you can't handle it, or you are under 18, because you shouldn't be playing this if you are!
The first one was great, but my goodness, this one takes it to a new level!!!!!
Must-own.
Lastly, I would like to thank the developers for creating this wonerful game. You really listened to the poeple and made it so we love it. Thank you for making me be really scared and chilled to the bone. Really I was cold, and it wasn't cold in the room. This game is the best horror game, thank you, people at Visceral Games. If I had a hat I would take it off to ya, but I don't have one.
I played the original Resident Evil when it first came out in 1996, and ever since then I've loved survival horror/third person action games. Dead Space 2 is another outstanding addition to both genres. I thought nothing could ever top Resident Evil 4 in terms of quality, design, and sheer fun, but Dead Space 2 comes pretty close. The hallmarks of this game are its extremely creepy and oftentimes grotesque atmosphere, thrilling action sequences, and high degree of customization of your weapons and items.
I've written a pretty detailed review--mostly intended for those new to the series like I am, so I'll give an abbreviated version with scores right below if you don't want to read what I have to say for each aspect of the game:
Gameplay: 5/5
Atmosphere: 5/5
Graphics: 5/5
Sound: 5/5
Mechanics/ease of control: 4/5
Story: 4/5
Overall: 5/5
ATMOSPHERE/GRAPHICS:
In many ways the settings/environments make this game. Each area of the game has its own unique scares and horrific imagery. One aspect that I really liked was that the game throws you right in the deep end, forcing you to cope with enemies right from the start, and you never look back. This contrasts with many games (Resident evil 4/5, Half-Life, Doom 3, FEAR) in which everything starts quiet and normal, and then the situation quickly turns chaotic. The feeling of being hunted while unarmed and trying to figure your way out of the initial 20 minutes of the game really added some exciting nervous intensity to the opening moments, which one doesn't often experience in other games. Other settings do a great job instilling fear, especially when the player first enters the living quarters area of the Sprawl. The player witnesses Necromorphs attacking Sprawl residents indiscriminately, and the screaming, yelling and general disarray create a fairly realistic feeling of panic. Lighting is also another key component of Dead Space 2's atmosphere. Almost every area is pretty dark with few exceptions, and since many enemies move fast, this creates a visceral feeling similar to Doom 3's poorly lit environments.
GAMEPLAY:
While the base game mechanics are not terribly different from many over-the-shoulder style third person shooters, several aspects are worth mentioning. One of the hallmarks of Dead Space 2 is that it forces players to use weapons to defeat enemies in a different way. In a time when headshots are the gold standard for 99% of games, Dead Space 2 requires players to sever limbs in order to defeat enemies--well-placed head shots will get you nowhere. This is a refreshing change of pace, as the dismemberment strategy will change based on enemy type (there are several), and thus every battle becomes much more tactical. There are also a wide variety of unique weapons to choose from, and each weapon will serve a different purpose in your arsenal, depending on how you want to fine tune your Necromorph killing strategy. Puzzles are frequent enough to serve as welcome breaks from the tense action, but not too frequent to become annoying. Another cool aspect of gameplay is Isaac's kinesis powers, which allow him to move small objects and launch them to break windows or kill enemies (not unlike the gravity gun in Half-Life 2). Although not quite as fun as the gravity gun from HL2, this ability has its uses in moving objects to solve puzzles, and launching dangerous objects to kill Necromorphs, which can be handy at higher difficulties when conserving ammo becomes extremely important. Another ability called Stasis is used to slow down enemies and objects, giving you invaluable time to slay larger or faster Necromorphs or solve key puzzles. Using Stasis is fun and rewarding, and it becomes an even more crucial element as the game progresses.
Dead Space 2 also gives you a great deal of leeway in how you want to customize your weapons/items/suit. Locations known as "benches" serve as upgrading stations that allow you to use "power nodes" which can be bought or found to unlock upgrades to weapons, items, and your suit. The upgrade "map" for each weapon actually resembles a simpler version of the Sphere Grid from Final Fantasy X. Power nodes can be used to access abilities, and since the upgrade maps branch out considerably, you have to make strategic decisions in following certain "routes" of customization. The player uses power nodes upgrade things such as damage, reload speed, capacity, and alternate fire damage for weapons, and hit points for the suit, to name a few examples.
SOUND:
I almost never devote a separate section to a game's sound. While sound is important in all games, the sound in each area of Dead Space 2 creates a truly unique horror experience that stands apart from many other games. I'm not just talking about the occasional burst of steam/loud clanking noise intended for a cheap scare--Dead Space 2 uses sound in a way that creates a very tense/foreboding experience. Walking through a hallway in an apartment the player will hear muffled screams and conversations behind doors. Necromorph sounds can be heard as well, but these don't always lead to a predictable surprise by an enemy. Sometimes seemingly ominous sounds will result in nothing, which makes it even scarier when something actually does happen.
MECHANICS/CONTROLS:
Dead Space 2 handles pretty well on the PS3. Since I was brand new to the series, it took some time for me to get acquainted with the controls--even with the tutorials--but I managed to get pretty comfortable handling the game after ~20 minutes of play. Controlling/maneuvering Isaac is also fairly fluid--he doesn't feel too sluggish. The camera controls pretty well for the most part, although occasionally problems arose when being backed into a corner or attacked in certain corridors that made it difficult to see what was happening. One ability that I would have liked to see in Dead Space 2 that was missing was a "quick turn" maneuver that would allow Isaac to swing 180 degrees to turn around rather than having to do it manually.
STORY:
While a crappy story certainly doesn't break a game for me, having a good one doesn't hurt. Dead Space 2 delivers well on the story aspect, and it's enough to keep you intrigued for the most part. It's fun to read and listen to text/audio logs from various Sprawl inhabitants and watch video feed of key characters as they guide you through your objectives, all of which contribute to the story and enhance the experience. Dead Space 2 also presents occasional interactive cutscenes, which are interesting, although don't expect the intricacy of interaction found in Resident Evil 4. The voice acting and script are pretty good--better than most movies, but nothing that necessarily deserves an Oscar. Gunner Wright does a great job giving Isaac a sense of personality, and the character dialog isn't nearly as corny as some games (RE4 comes to mind).
OVERALL:
This is a fantastic game. It's one of those rare gems that really delivers on every front, from graphics to story and map design. So many games these days are stooped in formulaic mediocrity; it's nice to see a game that changes that by injecting a little variety into the experience. If you haven't already, please get this game. I'm sorry I didn't play it sooner.
