The central character Stan seems to be your typically trucluent adolescent: only he is also plagued by gruesome visions of monsters in varying stages of death or decomposition.
One morning he wakes up to find himself stuck in history, Groundhog style, cursed to repeat the same day.
But as we are to discover, there's a reason and logic behind the freeze.
This is the beginning of a breakneck race to save humanity from an army of the undead led by a stomach-churning relic of General Gordon's 19th century siege at Khartoum.
The terrifying Sergeant Moses, mutton chopped whiskered, with three ornate heartseeker daggers protruding from his chest, chillingly boasts:
"I can kill as I please. Kill until I have sated myself and quietened mankind's pitiful wail. Give yourself up and I will spare them. Persist in this defiance and I will continue to kill.. I will make this city run with blood."
It's some achievement that Simon Paul Woodward creates sympathy even for this vile figure, flashing back to his death in Khartoum:
"He fights like a devil. You need magic daggers- heartseekers- to kill a devil, says the one eyed warrior. Others urge him on. You curse them. Then the blades fall, slide effortlessly into your chest. One. Two. Three. So sharp you don't feel them steal your life. The square is fading. So are the screams. It isn't fair. The pompous asses should have listened to you, they should have..."
Only Stan can save the human race, and start Time again.
Wonderfully paced and with a vivid depiction of some breath-.taking action scenes, I was gripped until the final pages of this first novel.
Stan Griffin's promotional film for All the Dead Things is also well worth watching... there's surely a full length movie in this.
