- Perfect for fans of Kate Carlisle and Ellery Adams
- For readers of cozy mysteries and small-town cozy fiction
For school psychologist Skye Denison, there's certainly no place like home. When a violent tornado shakes up the small river town, she can't see how the community will ever recover—especially since town councilman Zeke Lyons appears to have perished in the twister.
But things get even worse for Skye when her police chief husband, Wally, disappears in the midst of investigating Zeke's death. Did Zeke really die in the storm, or was he the victim of an un-welcome murder? And could Wally be next on the criminal's hit list? As evidence arises pointing to foul play, Skye will have to jump into this seemingly dead-end investigation to save her husband and her town.
"Rejoice, Scumble River fans! Skye and Wally and the whole gang are back―and Denise Swanson proves once again that she is among the top writers of the genre. With more twists and turns than a tornado―a real tornado!―Dead in the Water is fast-paced and fun, with a smart, savvy protagonist, some truly sinister villains, a suspenseful plot, and a delightfully satisfying ending. I can't wait to visit Scumble River again!" - Kate Carlisle, New York Times bestselling author

Reading the Scumble River series is like visiting with old friends. All of the characters I have come to love and some I don’t care for but who are necessary to the story are back. I think this is some of Swanson’s best work in this series. She skillfully weaves information on previous events into the current story in a way that is good for new readers, but doesn’t leave longtime followers bored or impatient. And Skye is finally getting a backbone with her mother – personally, I would have cut that woman off at the knees seven books ago, but Skye must be a better person than I am.
I thoroughly enjoyed being carried along by the story, following Skye and Wally, her husband and Scumble River Sheriff, as they went about their days, living life while solving the crimes. The various situations were nicely wrapped up by the end of the book and I found the ending very satisfying. This series was one of the first “cozy” mysteries I read, and I liked it from the get go. Skye is a non-traditional heroine – flawed, not magazine pretty, but warm and kind-hearted and dedicated. And she gets the hot guy! Sometimes, nice girls finish first. If you like character-driven, slice of life mysteries with fully-developed characters and interesting plots, give this one a go. And if this is your first brush with Scumble River, pick up the previous books – you’ll be glad you did.

Skye seems to be 100 months pregnant poor bugger, she is loving carrying Wally's baby but term 3 is just darn uncomfortable her reaction at the Dr's was just adorable.
A tornado hits Scumble river, Wally finds a dead body and it doesn't look natural death, Skye is having braxton hicks contractions and she worries the baby might come early, there is so much to be done after the tornado 75% of the town has no power Skye and Wally's house is all but gone and then to top it off Wally goes missing and through it all Skye stays stronger than I thought she would I just love her.
Wally's dad Corson flies to Skye's rescue and does an amazing job of being wonder dad and keeping Skye safe just as Wally would want him to. Sky's mum is trying not to worry Sky to much and I have to say May stepped up for me in this one she was a lot less critical of Skye which was awesome I prefer May less critical I would love to see her and Skye become closer and Skye to focus less on her body image, she is gorgeous just the way she is.
All round another wonderful Scumble River mystery with all my favourite characters and great murder solved and a very wonderful ending
