The author, Boyd Petersen is the director of a Mormon Studies program at Utah Valley University. I have read one previous book by him about his father-in-law and noted Mormon apologist and scholar Hugh Nibley which I enjoyed and reviewed. Hugh Nibley: A Consecrated Life
I'm a sucker for anything with "Rushing Water" in the title and I enjoyed the essays about growing up around the Provo River and exploring its banks. Some of my happiest moments were collecting specimens off the bottom of the Provo River while in graduate school at BYU. My favorite creature is a giant stonefly, Pteronarcys, that lives out in the rapids, fairly deep, that thrives in an environment that seems cold and dark. These essays are introspective and revealing.
The only reason I didn't rank this book higher is that the author seemed to not be able to view issues like doubt, feminism, and Book of Mormon material from the viewpoint of others. There was all too much setting up of an "other" group. Perhaps that is too much to expect in these mostly first person essays, but since I'm part of the "other" group, I found it to be objectionable and felt shallowly characterized.
Still the author expressed his veiwpoints well, supported them well and did so in an entertaining manner which made this book enjoyable to read.
