Seanan lives in Seattle with her cats, a vast collection of creepy dolls and horror movies, and sufficient books to qualify her as a fire hazard.

I won't lie, Seanan McGuire could write just about anything, but a one-shot Weird West circus yard with creepy monsters and people dying left and right? Yeah, that I would DEFINITELY read LOL. I don't know much (if anything really) about the RPG World this story is based in, but I really loved the worldbuilding and characters here in Boneyard. Everyone from the creatures to the circus folk to the monsters and their victims felt so real even in such a fantastical world. I'm not at all surprised by that considering McGuire does a fantastic job with characters, but it was nice to have that confirmed with a tie in novel like this! I also really loved Annie, our protagonist - she wasn't a fighter in the traditional sense, but she was so so strong in her own way and utterly devoted to her daughter and keeping her safe and as healthy as possible. Just a really great romp of a read. I kinda wish McGuire had written more in this world!

Narratively speaking, I would follow Seanan McGuire anywhere: even into an RPG franchise I'd never heard of before I found out she'd written this book. I was worried that I might be lost, but the opening chapters smoothly introduced me to our scene. The writing here is often lyrical and descriptive, as beautiful turns of phrase alternate with sharp and snappy dialogue.
Our heroine Annie Pearl, mistress of a carnival's Oddities and mother to an ill and injured girl, must protect all her charges from threats in a mysterious Oregon forest town, while her past life looms behind her.
The DEADLANDS setting itself is not my cup of tea. Nevertheless, I would 100% buy and read any future DEADLANDS book by Seanan McGuire, especially if it starred Annie Pearl.

I normally don't read novelizations, because there is so much backstory that you have to know to enter the book. I bought this one on McGuire's name, though, and I don't regret it! I got the time of the setting easily, the steampunk w as pretty obvious, and I expected elements of fantasy because it was a Seanan McGuire novel! Annie is a great character and Adeline could anchor a series of her own. The pacing is quick, the story is thoroughly explored, and I really liked the use of an old west circus as the central part of the story. Great read!

I have to admit, I don't play the roleplaying game, so I knew nothing about the world I was about to enter. But this book was a page turner and such a rich story, I may have to check the game out too! Seanan McGuire weaves multiple lives together in a seamless way and you genuinely want to know what happens to all of the characters by the end. I have picked up books 1 & 2 in the series just to round it out, hope they are even half as good.

I love Seanan McGuire, I love Deadlands, I love the Weird West. This is a winner. And can be read as a standalone, no background required.

I enjoyed the story even though I am not familiar with the setting. The characters and monsters were very fascinating.
