The pace is riveting, and I found myself unable to put the book away without reading "Just one more chapter" several times. Its pace reminds me of that of a Netflix series: each chapter ending in a way that begs, demands, you continued to see how the situation is resolved.
The characters are simply wonderful. From the beginning Grey sets himself up as a rough-and-tumble, gruff protagonists while also establishing his hidden heroic side; but Grey Torrence doesn't carry the story alone. His companions, the snarky and intelligent Thomas Looks Away, an exiled Sioux with a "peculiar" accent and the fiery and brave Jenny Pearl, a farm girl with a score to settle with the villain. Each of the three shine in serial scenes and their bond feels real as it grows throughout the tale. Though not as focal, the other players in the story, such as Father Joe, are not left out when it comes to characterization.
If I had to point out a flaw, the only one that I can call to mind is authors frequent use of repetition, often repeating words. Likely for emphasis; but this doesn't detract from the story as a whole.
While you do not need to have fore knowledge of the Deadlands universe to enjoy this book, those with such knowledge will undoubtedly find themselves elated to see references to things from the game and similar connections. Overall this book makes a great addition to the library of anyone who enjoys Deadlands, or even just anyone who enjoys a good weird west tale, hell, even for anyone who enjoys a good adventure.
This novel is indeed something totally different than anything I have read before and does contain certain Maberry telltale elements, i,e,. humor, action, horror and violence, zombies and other undeads, along with totally new concepts like steampunk inventions, weapons of mass destruction, deus ex machina, and dinosaurs. Characterization, while adequate, is not as deep as I might have liked.
Grey Torrance is a gunfighter roaming the west that is California after a massive earthquake has carved the state into canyons and water filled chasms. He is literally "haunted" by those he failed to save so he continues moving to avoid having to be confronted. Grey reluctantly teams with Thomas Looks Away, a Sioux indian scientist who spent many years in Britain (don't ask, just go with it) to seek the source of "Ghost Rock", a powerful explosive that can be employed as a super fuel. Before long, teamed with spitfire female Jenny Pearl, they unite in purpose to save the people of Paradise Falls from a necromancer determined to raise an army of the undead to take control of all that he sees.
Pacing is somewhat uneven as periods of action and adventure are too often followed by long passages of discourse where little happens...but that may be a personal quibble. If you can see yourself enjoying a new sub genre that includes mad scientists, steampunk inventions, super weapons of mass destruction in the old West, zombies, dinosaurs, vampire witches, and necromancy--"Ghostwalkers" is definitely up your alley.
